Well Hello,Ron! It's good to be back. I have found that my Akathoukinoumi have more ruffling than my Suigetsu, otherwise very difficult to tell apart. And WHAT are you doing up so late?!
Hi Gail - You ask what(!) am I (!) doing up so late...I could ask what you(!) are doing up so late, but I know like me,you are attending to the MG forum amonst other things...
It may be in order to document another one of your great groundbreaking(!) easy to view side-by-side comparisons of the blooms, sepals and leaf shapes of the Akathoukinoumi and the very similar looking Suigetsu like you did for some of the other large blue colored JMG's as posted here
Frontal view they are from the left: Hatsu Arashi,Akatsuki No Umi,Berlin Blue

Once again, glad to have you back...

Beautiful blooms. The Matsukazi is my favorite. Your daughter's MG is very lovely. I admire the people that have the patience to hybridize.
Ron,I can provide the photo info on Akathoukinoumi's leaves and sepals, but I believe my Suigetsu is bloomed out.Do the sepals remain the same size as the seed capsule is ripening? Never grow? If so I will wait for a break in the "cats and dogs" and snap some pics.
shadowgirl,thank you. I admire her patience,too! I certainly don't have it!
I just get my "new" morning glories by accident! Like this one who was "Berlin Blue " last year, but looks to me like a "Henka" got involved...snuck into the gene pool when the lifeguard wasn't watching!
Emmas Silky Blue is famulous. So is Fujimusumi. Isn't it nice to finally be getting some blooms? I thought they were very slow to start this year.
susan
wow... my wish list just got significantly longer... Golgi, I love them all... and is that Berlin Blue seriously that BLUE?? gorgeous...
Brittany
How can one get some of your seeds?can you be bribed or bought?
Golgi I love the Fujimusumi and the "candystipe came out nice!!
Great flowers!
Gail - The way I look at it is,it's a very good idea to get whatever pictures you can capture of the important ID structures while you can...and if you/we have to wait until the significant structures of a similar flower are available from another photo shot to do a comparison...>So be it...it's better to have photos of the important ID features from one>as they are then visually documented and available for comparison until the structures from the other flowers to compare to are available...>make sense(?)...
The sepals usually do go through various size and shape changes at different stages of developement>and ideally(!) it is best to have sepal photos at all of the following stages>flowerbuds, flower, immature seedpod, almost mature seedpod, mature but still green seedpod and fully ripened seedpod...That's the way the taxanomic Pro's do it...
I'm just shareing what I know>don't hold it against me...
The sepals changes can vary from slight to drastic at different stages of growth and that is the very reason that they are such a great aid in identifying the species and sometimes the cultivars...
If I had just one type of sepal shot to compare,it would be of the sepals at the base of the flower, but the sepals on the seedpods of an almost mature seedpod would be a very close second choice...some sepals may remain relatively straight and then curl drastically when the pod fully matures or dries...or the sepals may not curl but simply 'fold' backwards...the amount of change can vary with the species and with the cultivar...
Complete documentation is preferable to incomplete, but some documentation is better than none...
So,You proceed as you are able to...
The flowers remain inspiring...
TTY,...
Ron

That's exactly the info I was looking for,Ron. Thank you.I will do my best to capture images of what I can.
luvsgrtdanes,"Candystripe" IS lovely..thank you for the seeds. it is a profuse bloomer, and has very large flowers.
veeja3,I have my doubts that I will get seeds from these this year,as they are very late blooming, and the weather has been continuously WET WET WET!!
But I will keep you in mind.D-mail me and let me know what you would like-I may have some xtras stashed.
Gail
My daughter provided the pics of Suigetsu, and personally I am having a tough time seeing any difference.
golgi-Gail -
It looks to me like there are some unusual sepal structures to both>I've seen this occur on some other cultivars like Kanoko and Fuji Shibori...
Akathoukinoumi...leaves and sepals...unusual number of sepals...how many is there altogether(?)>including the ones behind the flower tube(?)...
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/golgi_1157131099_143.jpg
Suigetsu sepals...also more than the usual number of sepals...I count 8 sepals (usually just 5,2 outer,2 inner and the inbetween type)...I can't see all of the bases,so unable to determine the number of outer sepals, inner type sepals and the 'inbetween' type with the base that is partially covered and partially exposed......looks like partial(?) extra secondary bracts also...
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/golgi_1157131255_318.jpg
Suigetsu leaves...central lobe seems more elongated, possibly thinner(?) and with more of an indentation below the upper lobes
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/golgi_1157131353_288.jpg
Looking forward to your continued findings...

Hi Gail,
I too have unfortunantly had to miss out on the Fabulous photos and postings on Daves this year, but I WILL read up this winter. Came across your thread by accident, and I got some SPECTACULAR blooms from the seeds you sent me.
I too got a 'sport' from your Berlin Blue and just HAD to share it with you.
Is this too incredible!
Thanks for posting your lovely beauties, Gail.
Emma
This thread has wonderful photos, they made my morning!
