My lilacs just really like this cool, moist weather. My sad-looking McFarlane is putting out new growth again. And my Adelaide Dunbar, although it dropped half its leaves, is still alive and looks like it's thinking about new buds.
The ones I haven't planted yet are putting out new buds. I have to plant them this fall, and I admit I'm a bit worried about how they'll fare.
Lilac update
I think if you plant them in the fall they'll be fine (assuming fall is an OK time to plant in your area--it isn't everywhere). I think your others had trouble because you planted them during or right before summer and the scorching sun and heat can be very hard on newly planted plants. But you won't have that problem in the fall so I bet they'll be just fine.
