Chachamaru x Mt Fuji blue

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Results are in for a pod I got off the Chachamaru. I can see why cross pollination could be trouble...the results came out a flower that favors Chachamaru but it is blue like the Mt Fuji. The leaves look more like Chachamaru but are modified somewhat intermediate between the two parents. Some of the other vines show a red rim around the edges of the leaves and there is light silvery variegation on one vine. The pollen anthers appear the exact same as on the Chachamaru. The looks very much like Chachamaru only it is an intense inky blue color.

The leaves are bigger than the Mt Fuji leaves and smaller than the Chachamaru leaves.

This is the Mt Fuji pollen parent.

gardener2005 - The bloom you show here

also has 5 yojiros like the Chachamaru...

I'm wondering if there is a particular reason that you use the spelling of 'fugi' instead of the usual fuji...the plants were named after the mountain in Japan> Mt.Fuji...

I don`t understand what you mean by my bloom having 5 yogiros like the Chachamaru. I call these mixed variety JMGs because they are mixed.

I do know about Mount Fuji. The incorrect spelling of Mt fuji was me in a hurry not writing everything perfect.

Hey Gardner how about saveing me a few seeds from that MG Regards Paul

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Sure. I always do give away my extra seeds as "mixed JMGs" and noone has ever complained :)

Maybe, if you grow out the second generation then you could have some pretty flowers for your garden and maybe even something that turns out a little different. You never know.

I do have a plan. I want a larger chocolate flower with the edge like what is on one of my other yogiros. I wondered if the chocolate was hiding and would come back out again. I haven`t a clue but will continue with the plans.

Sounds Good

Now that I got to sit down and think a minute, yojiro means ray white so you meant 5 rays. cool :)

Is the correct spelling yojiro or youjiro? I have seen it spelled both ways and I`m confused.

I get tired running around taking care of all my little baby plants and it drains my brain at times.

gardener2005 - Yes,I was comparing the number of white rays>yojiros>of the 2 different parents to the offspring and noticed that your Mt.Fuji has 8 white rays, while the crossed offspring is displaying a yojiro pattern closer to the Chachamaru...

Just an observation I thought worth taking note of...I've seen the spelling as yoJiro and Mt.FuJi...

My Mt Fuji has 5,6,7 and 8 yojiros on the same vine. it usually has 6 yojiros but the smaller flowers on the ends of the vines get 5 and the larger flowers near the large center vine and the base of the plant get 7 or 8 on a regular basis.

This morning I found a 5,6,7 and one flower with 8 yogiros all open on the same vine.

About 2 weeks ago there was a huge flower so big it was folded over with 8 spokes and the rays were larger and more pronounced. It looked so different that my husband called me on his cell phone on his way to work! I went out and tagged that one asap.

Yes,the larger yojiros like the Mt.Fuji series can produce usually up to 8 white rays along the primary ribs,as compared to the usually smaller flowered yojiros like the Mai Sugata,Chiaki,Yaguruma and Sayaka which rarely produce more than 6 white rays and most usually produce the characteristic 5 white rays...
