I'm just wondering why this zone 5 tree/shrub isn't at any of my local nurseries. Anybody growing this anywhere in the midwest in zone 5 without trouble?
Thanks,
Dax
Stewartia pseudocamellia In Illinois
I am, and I see it for sale sporadically at local nurseries.
I bought one this spring at a nursry up in Duluth, MN, which known to carry the unusual. It's planted a few feet from Acer griseum on an east facing slope, protected from NW, west and south by White Pines. The Paper Bark survived its first winter, but I'm not so optimistic about the Stuartia.
We have a relatively new one here, struggling with our droughts. But there's a nice one on the lawn of the governor's mansion, where irrigation can be applied as needed courtesy of your tax dollars. Our S. monadelpha is a little older and doing much better, as is S. sinensis.

Dax, If you ever get to the great white north check out Edelweiss Nursery in Duluth--you'll love it. The owner (German native) does a lot of conifer grafting, and he and his wife are the most down to earth people you'll ever meet. To give you some idea of their offerings, they also had the S. monadelpha Guy mentioned. According to the owner, monadelpha is not as hardy as pseudocamellia.
Very good guys. Thanks very much.
Dax
