Time to bump this up!

My Gladiolus papilio has one stem in bloom, another on it's way, one got broken off by a falling apple so I put them in the greenhouse.

I have 2 pots with 3 bulbs in each, so far all but one looks to be making a flower spike, the other may do yet, it looks to be increasing madly.

They do grow quite tall and tend to flop over but such a pretty flower, I am willing to support them!

Lust!

Want more lust?

Who has seen this on the lily thread?

I have! Wow, better yet...

I've got blue sky & lily lust from that last picture Wallaby!

Tammy, you have no blue skies? We are having a mixture here, very pleasant!

Lily lust is a progressive disease!

I have a 'sport' on my 'Duet' dahlia, which is blood red with white tips. Just one stem on a clump I removed about 6 years ago when I moved the whole plant. I planted it about a foot away from the parent and they have been there for that long in the ground, always flowering but I haven't looked after them at all, just an accasional bit of fertiliser thrown their way and once or twice mulched but generally it hasn't had any real protection in winter.

This stem has made it's second flower with more making, but a snail is eating the tips off before it opens and it looks tatty. I would have gone out last night to look for it if I could have been bothered. The next one to open yesterday was complete, today is eaten!

What do you all think to this one if you can imagine it with it's white tips? I think it is unique, is this going to make me rich? The red striping is a rich ruby but other than that what you see is correct.

You'll be rich.

Your colours K, I think it's the prettiest thing I've seen in a dahlia, I have never seen one like it.

I will have to post on the dahlia forum and see what others think. If I want to propogate this I will have to take cuttings now, and every side shoot is making flowers. Some have small buds on so I could nip them off, but I'm not sure this is a good time.

Since it hasn't done this before I'm wondering if it will do the same next year, but every flower that is making is the same and the stem is coming from the centre along with the others. I had thought it might have set a seed but I don't think it so, all the stems are tight together.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I think it is different and unique. You'll be rich and then you can come across the pond and visit with us all!

I have Kenton's revenge, aka earwigs eating them!

I don't know how to stop them, don't want to use chemicals, perhaps try the box method. There's several earwigs on each flower and it's a large plant with lots of flowers. They must be eating my brugs too, I think that's why I didn't bother after my first attempt! The hot season must have suited the little d-ear-lings.

Oh yes, that would be grand voss!

Denver, CO

Make some sort of barrier (sticky?) on the stem- the only earwig route up. Just an idea. They absolutely love the edged types and like to devour what makes it unique...
Reminds me a bit of Dahlia 'Be-a-Sport.'

Will have to do something, it's not in my flower bed but at the back of the potato patch near the neighbour's fence, I can blame her!

It does look a lot like 'Be-a sport' which I haven't seen before, if the pic is the correct colour I think mine has the 'edge' on it!

That's a pretty neat one you've got Wallaby, just wish it was all there. Another of mine:

Now I'm gonna just have to get back into dahlia's! I have a few small ones with black folliage
I use in my container planting. But that's about it.

And we've got the left overs of a hurricane going through. After 3wks of dry parched weather in
most of August, we're getting LOTS of rain. About 3" last week and now an inch since last night. No
blue skies here. (But my azaleas are looking much better - I'd planted a number of deciduous types
and they were starting to look pretty sad. Whew! I can't imagine having to water all summer as
many folks in other parts of the country do.)

I love the photographic style on those jmorth! Is it night w/flash? Or how do you
get that marvelous black background with the flowers popping out so brilliantly?

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

yellow one is very floriferous

As you surmised Tammy, flash on at night...

Hi, new to Daves Garden, does any one have experiance with the double blooming iris? From what I understand they will bloom twice season. Thanks

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Welcome cowcrazy (great name!). One very mild autumn, Immortality and Champagne Encore rebloomed for me.

somewhere, PA

I have a pink rebloomer. I bought a collection of 5 a few years ago (big sale - don't recall company).
They arrived VERY late in the fall & I had to just stuff 'em in my vegatable garden. I lost all the labels
and four of the five. But the rebloomer is very nice this year, twice!

From asking an Iris grower, I understand that it is variable to your climate, and that some tend to rebloom better than others in some places. Ask local iris growers what does for them.
Welcome to DG, CowCrazy.

Since I took these on the last day of summer...I'm gonna post 'em here!

Cyclamen Hederifolia - finally I got one to bloom!

My three favorite autumn blooming classics! Nice, Tam.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Tammy, I covet all 3! Are those the cyclamen you started from seed?

somewhere, PA

I've planted lots and lots of those I started from seed. I did buy a few big specimens
at a "half price" sale two years ago. I've planted all of them under my dogwoods and
in the shade garden by the steps to the house. I don't actually know which is the
one that survived & bloomed for me this year.

Thanks
