Fooling Morning Glorys

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Is there a way you can fool a mg and have it open at a specific time? What are the parameters for blooms to open?

I don't know about controlling the time of day that they flower, but they are short day plants that need at least 9 hours of darkness for them to set flower buds.

You just want to make it easier to see your new hybrids bloom, don't you!!!! I share the feeling! - except that I'm actually physically away from home most of the week....

I dont think that that goes for all the MG:s because when my MG.s started to put out buds we still had a lot shorter nights then 9 hours but they took about four weeks to open .
I think the trigger mecanism on many MG:s is the fact that days ARE getting shorter and nights longer that makes them put out buds otherwise we wouldnt get a darn flowerbud ever here untill late September/Oktober and by then growingseason would be over long ago.
As Ron said in a mail and I can only confirm when I see when our or your "native" MG:s flower. Plants adapt and change their growing phases the longer they are exposed to "that" particular growingconditions

You can only control flower time of hour/day and month wise if you cut off ALL natural light and have artificial lighting.

Xeramtheum - I've read where it has been done in botany labs useing every chemical trick in the book, but it isn't feasible for the everyday gardener...the parameters for flowering are the combined effect of lighting and as modified by all (!) other environmental factors...

atenkley-Arlan - very good link...the information presented on there is accurate, although not absolute(!)...even if they still call it 'Pharbitis' nil...

Janett_D - you're a fast learner...

Some links where I shared on the subject previously...

Chemtrails and HAARP are messing up the atmosphere/ionosphere/magnetosphere by intentionally manipulating weather control...who knows what these experiments will ultimately do to all forms of life and the entire planet...

Let's enjoy the flowers while were all still here...

hehe Ron, if something interests me and I dont "try to get it in all at ones" things stick.

That HAARP thing is way scary.
We have a continues weather record that dates back 250 years, every single day year round and also have other weather record but not going in one continues line. Up to 12 years ago Sweden NEVER have had a tornado. Well the first truck across the whole county ripping trees and taring down houses it stopped about 2 miles from where I lived then. My daycaremom saw the tornade comming to hwere they lived, she just swoped up the kids and the older ones she yelled to them to run to the basement. Hadent she held her head that cold I may had lost a daughter. Luckley the tornade did hit her house directly but it passed the garden of hers and my tiny daughter was just a 1 year old toddler
I saw the remaines of several old oak trees ripped up and a over 100 ft barn (cows) was just shredded to tothpicks,. Luckly all the cows where out on the pastures.
A few days ago another big one hit in the more northern Sweden, it came in over a lake and hit a camping ground. one Lady said she and her hubby was sitting outside their trailer and suddenly the trailer next to them just "disappered" up in the air. Luckely NO ONE was hurt .
In between those two big ones we have had smaller ones too and I think if we keep this up.......................I am gonna enjoy the flowers as long as I can and PRAY that they dont blow us all up. Sadly i actually think that the Movie "Day after tomorrow" is comming, just a question of WHEN.

Here is a quote from the Beginner's Guide to Asagao...

Q: I want to see the flowers opening, but getting out of bed early is my great weak point. It would be nice if the flowers would open later!

A: Morning glory flowers open earlier in September and October than they do in July. In July, when night falls late, the flowers open at about 4:00 a.m. But in September and October, when the sun goes down earlier, the flowers begin to open at about 2:00 a.m. You may think that the length of time from sunset to flower opening is almost the same.
If you want the flowers to open later, you should delay the time of sunset by using artificial illumination (artificial lighting). Take a potted plant that has a lot of flower buds inside your house in the evening, and illuminate it with a fluorescent lamp until late into the night. Then take the potted plant back outside in the dark, and observe the appearance of opening flowers for 2 or 3 days. There is some difference according to temperature and variety, but a flower will open at 7 to 8 a.m. every day if you illuminate it until 10:00 p.m. every night.
What time will a morning glory flower open if you invert night and day by using a fluorescent lamp at night and putting the plant in a dark closet during the daytime? Test this idea under various conditions by considering the plan for yourself.

I saw this and thought of this thread! Thought this might help!

Thanks Arlan! I'll give it a try.

Yes,potted plants that are kept small are easy to move around....and if you want the plants growing on your back fence to flower at 3 in the afternoon get your stadium lights on timers and have your automated sunlight blocking drop cloths enabled ...>Lights(!)...Cameras(!)...Action(!)...

I have morning glories planted right under a strong halogen light on our apartment building. I didn't have any blooms in July or August, but now that the vine is big enough so that the front of it (faces the balcony but not the light) doesn't get as much light, I'm beginning to get a few blooms. I don't know what time they open, but I do know that the building light is on a timer till daylight.
