Purple Diamond Loropetalum

Plano, TX(Zone 7a)

Hi,

I am planning to get a couple of these. Does anybody have any experience with this variety? Also any information on its performance in the TX heat will be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Bumping up so people view this thread again.

I don't grow it. I have some familiarity with it from retail nursery descriptions only. The color of this Chinese Withchazel was compared to the Crimson King Norway Maple and it can't be grown in my zone which is a 5. I have no idea if it can be grown in your zone or not.

Not much more I can tell you other than what I typed above which is not a personal experience with growing this plant.

Just planted one of these a month or so ago, f6r22, and - surprisingly - my zone is the same as yours, though our summers aren't horribly hot. Lazy S's, from whom I purchased, listed it as winter-hardy in our zone. The little shrub is settling in nicely, and the foliage is a beautiful, very deep purple color. Can't tell you much else; haven't had it in place long.

thanks for the replies.

By chance the nursery I visited yesterday had a new load of 1 gallon size of these, I ended up getting two, Like spartacusaby mentioned the color is intense, from a distance I thought they were crimson pygmy barberry. I talked to the company that developed this cultivar, and they assured me that it should do well in my zone.

I will be planting this on the ground in a couple of days, and hope for the best.

xman,

Did you get them at NHG? I just got one of the last one's they had. They were $14.99. I think I'd like to get another one, but want to get the best deal.

Thanks!

I've had a bit of experience growing Loropetalums and they seem to do their best grown amongst other shrubs in some shade or at the end of shade. If they're in the open they seem to look rough by the end of summer.

sweezel,

I got mine at Calloways, most of them got a new load of these plant a few weeks ago. They are listed at $12.99 for a 1 gallon (which is the only size they have), but if you go between 5:00P.M. -7:00 PM on fridays you get 20% off on you purchase.
