Is THIS what happens to those little chicks we used to get for Easter?

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

They are beautiful!!! What is EEE, ya think that will do it every time??

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Yup
thats the easter egg chicks ......

EEE
Eastern Equine Encephalitis
they found 12 active mosquito pools in the swamp across the street

So they areial sprayed for skeeters

but Sherry, I was kidding about the reaction to it,you soooooo didn't believe it
It was a tye dye kit
add water and spray the feathers being very careful not to get it in their skin or eyes

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Tie-dyed chickens. crestedchik, you were a hippie once, weren't you? Still?

Oregon City, OR(Zone 8b)

Hate to break it to ya, but your chickens are showing signs of drug use.
They aren't the "little angels" you think they are.

They been slippin' into that mushroom patch you've got going...

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

CC, how did you manage to get such conformity with the color, it is perfecto?? Do you think I could do that to my Sultans?? They are well adjusted to water and they are very tame. What I'd like to do, is try what you did and surprise my grands, they would absolutely LOVE it!! They've always dressed up our animals, chickens included and they use makeup too, chalk works good and is safe for the grands and animals...any help and hints you might provide will be sincerely appreciated!!! Off the top, I'm thinking spray bottles with food color, am I totally off base??

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Question: CC, did you start from the rear and go to the head, or vice versa???? I only have three Sultans (two silkies, are they eligible?), so I need to know where I'm going before I start...

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

I LOVE IT(THEM)! I wish I could do that but our chickens are already in color. Only white chickens could have that done to them. But Jack would really freak if he walked out to see them. LOL

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Oh MY LORD
I'm laughing so hard I can't breath
You guys are toooo funny

My son say's they are REALLY hippie chicks.......

Its the first time I did it
I tried to use rit dye....green turned out blue...faded...yucky

Luckily I had bought the tye dye kit cause it had little spray bottles, along with a few other things...fabric markers....etc.....

I washed them, towel dried them and held the crest in my hand with my finger across their eyes and nose
Sprayed the bodies.....the fact that they were still wet helped 'cause the one color went into the other therefore changing the colors where they overlapped ...blue and yellow make green....etc.....
then I sprayed the crests but tried to hold my hand under the crest to keep the colors from bleeding too much

It worked good cause the dye never touched their skin......when they molt they will be white again

I just let all my artistic fustrations come out.....ROTFLMAO

and when I got done and they were outside drying I could not stop laughing.....until I thought of PETA

Everytime I hear someone come in the driveway I think its them commin to git me
course how can they complain...they paint fur.........

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

a picture of them ended up in the Syracuse paper
I copied it from their website

cc, you are talented, they are just beautiful, I think you are really creative and talented!! My Mop Head and my two other Sultans are not as mature as this one, but I am going to try it. How did you ever get it off of you - gloves, I guess, I just cannot work in gloves...

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Hey Crested, just showed these photos to my husband. He couldn't stop laughing either. This is hilarious. He kept saying to me over and over, "No, don't even think about it".

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

cc, your thread should have been titled 'something went right'!!!

Potsdam, NY(Zone 4a)

So, you took them to the State Fair like that? What a brilliant idea! I bet they caused quite a stir with everyone who saw them. Good for you. They look positively ready for an elegant Easter Parade! You did a great job on them. BAM

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

PETA (which serves its purpose -- I'm NOT knocking them) (entirely) needs to get a sense of humor.

Oregon City, OR(Zone 8b)

Hold on-------that's not photoshop?!?
You actually dyed your chickens!?!!

Falls Mills, VA

What a riot! ROTFL!!

Whats next for these birds?....A Grateful Dead concert and lefthanded cigaretts?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

OK
what are left handed ciggs?

nevermind...blonde moment

yes, they are dyed...and what a riot at the fair
There are crowds of people ........I just gotta laugh

Oregon City, OR(Zone 8b)

crestedchik: I assume your chickens' usual look is head-to-toe white. (unless you bleached them first, LOL, just kidding of course).

Do you have a "before" photo?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

on the photo forum there is
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/643506/

CC: They really are showstoppers! Were you worried the dye might be toxic to them? Even if it doesn't touch the skin, seems when they preen/pick, it would get into their system. Thoughts? Geeze, they look very "ballroom dancing!"
My husband tells of a notorious grocer in Tennessee who would "amaze" children by putting a chick in a large bottle and letting it grow into an adult chicken back in the 60's. Eventually, they'd have to break the bottle to get the chicken out.

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

They use to dye chicks when I was young, my dad would always buy us chicks for Easter, but I have no Idea what happend to them after that. Seems like we only would have them for about a week or so. I showed DH your pictures of your dyed chicks, we had a good laugh. I wonder what my silkies would think about being dyed, LOL.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Silkies are difficult to dye, the grand girls tried it, their feathers are too 'silkie'. One of the reasons they quit dying chickens for easter is because of the health restrictions with keeping live animals and another reason is because people in the city limits, are generally not allowed to have chickens. Our town does not have such an ordinance, but I would not keep them if my neighbors objected - as it turns out, my neighbors love them and bring them treats, they are very spoiled chickens...the dye is no different than the dye used for 'red' canaries, food coloring, but the canary gets the dye in water and the girls squirted the dye on the chickens. Hey, they dyed their own hair with it too, my blond grand had purple hair for a whole weekend...they have been putting makeup and hair dye on the Goldens since they were wee little ones, the girls, that is...

Friendsville, TN

Regarding those "Easter" chicks dyed when you were kids, I'm told the practice was stopped because it was toxic to the animals. The reason they weren't around long, is that the process used, ultimately killed the chicks.

Theresa, NY

Crested,
I saw your "hippie chicks" at the fair last Monday night. Everyone was asking how you did that...I had read your posts and was filling everyone in LOL.
