chaste tree, again...

Proctorville, OH(Zone 5b)

I started a sprig of green chaste tree in water, HA It now how about 1"roots & I am wondering what to do with it.... I was going to put it potting soil with some compost mixed in..... What do i do over the winter...
'
Perhaps I should just move it out in our protected bed & let it go, put a terrarium over it this winter... That is easier.... since the first move will most decidedly kill it.

Thanks for any help

I didn't know they would start in water. Ya learn somthin every day! I think I would pot it up, very carefully to avoid too much root damage. Use a light, fluffy mix that can settle gradually around the roots. Then when winter comes, give it good protection in a cool location to keep it dormant but unfrozen until spring.

Since I've never rooted them this way, hopefully someone here has better advice.

You don't want to buy a small rooted plant from a nursery in the spring?

Take Guy's suggestion and since you have a "nursery bed/ whatever (I say whatever because you're thinking about leaving it there as a permanent planting I got the feeling you were saying) , anyway, if you don't want to leave it there for permanent, pot it up and bury the pot in this bed for the winter.

I use 50/50 perlite to peat moss. Any other commercial brand (without fert!!!!) at this time of the year, I'm sure would work equally.

Burying potted plants in this manner is the safest of all ways (to overwinter).

I was very surprised it rooted as a green sprig! But it is basically an herb, so I guess that is understandable.

I like the "bury the pot plan." That sounds like my best plan for keeping it alive. I really don't like houseplants, I have a cactus in the corner.... That I can remember 3x a winter.

As far as buying one this spring? Yes! I would, but they haven't had them around here for 2 years, so I thought I'd try it this way. It's OK if I kill it... I won't be overwrought!

Thank you all for the neat advice....I just wish I had taken the bigger sprig. HA

My chaste trees never outgrow their pots, so I'm sure the plan would work.
jamesstorrs, you run a nursery? Just a guess.

It is just a beautiful bloomer. The leaf is pleasing, and it likes the dryness that is overtaking us these past summers...
