Peace Lilies

On the banks of the , VA(Zone 7a)

I have a peace lily that my husband took out of it's pot and stuck into the top of the gold fish bowl. Yes, with the fish.

It's leaves are yellowing up.

Is there any way to get this thing healthy in the fish bowl?

I'b be more worried about the fish.

Fish seems a-ok.

While I have had the set-up that you've described, I haven't taken a potted plant and put it in water. Did you make sure to remove all of the soil, and are you using the drops in the water to neutralize the ammonia?

He removed all the soil and the water in the fish bowl is Deer Park. I didn't think I needed to do much for it...is ammonia an issue in bottled water?

Bottled water is the only way I've managed not to kill my fish. Er. Kill my fish more often than I do. I am not a good fish mom.

LOL Me either, but I rescued some Beta's that someone left behind in an empty apartment. Had it for a least a couple of years before giving it to a friend.

The water source isn't so important as the ammonia comes from the fish waste. That's the only reason that I can think of as to why your plant is yellowing. Maybe it needs a period of adjustment? How long has it been since putting it in water?

About a week.

I didn't think about the fish poop. : (

I would think the plant would find the ammonia tasty, since it is a form of nitrogen. I would imagine it is a relocation shock and may even be an oxygen issue since its roots were surrounded by soil and air not too very long ago.

I am by no means intelligent in this area, but I had read that the reason you can combine plant roots and fish is because of the fish wastes being somewhat removed from the water by the plant. Then there is the thing about water rooting plants and plopping them into the ground and expecting them to survive and thrive right off the get go, this seems to be the reverse. Takes a bit of time to adjust to alien surroundings. :-)

I heard that, too, about the plant taking care of the waste ~ it doesn't happen. You still have to change the water and wash the marbles / rocks once in a while.

I did find that when changing the water, I would use it on my house plants. They sure seem it enjoy the fish-poop-water!

Thanks for the heads up Mary, I was thinking about doing this, but will now just stick with my parakeet!

LOL But just think what fantasies they could have while staring at each other!

I've had the fish/plant thing from WW for quite a few years for MIL. Once in awhile, the plants gets too big and when I get a new one, it tends to yellow somewhat at first. I wondered how deep you have the plant? The recommendation is to leave 1/2" air space in the wide part of the bowl (if you are using the type with the roundish bowl and narrower neck that WW sells) cuz the fish need that much air. So there tends to be a couple of inches of plant not in the water and that seems to fine once it's acclimatized. Hope it gets better for you. :)
