Speaking of that- does anyone want a Sinningia tubiformis for a trade for AV leaves or something? It isn't my cup of tea.
(And what is "TFS" please, for the stick-in-the-mud?)
Kenton
They're only Cylamen Mites.

I want to thank you all for the the information posted above. After reading all of them, I remembered that I have a AV, that was not quite "right". It was part of a plant that I bought off of ebay, a much wanted plant, Ruffled Skies, three plants in one pot. When I received them, under the direction of the seller, I separated them and they very quickly established themselves and started to bloom. One of of them, though, had droopy leaves and the blossoms were unusual. Kinda deformed, bent and not healthy looking. It kind of bothered me, but until I read the posts on this thread, did I sit up and take notice. On inspection of the "unusual plant", I noticed in the crown of the plant, some white powdery kind of debris. Then I knew, this is what they are talking about! That plant is now in the garbage. The other two plants from the same pot, seem fine, but I have isolated them. Yikes, one was sitting next to much coveted baby B-mans Etna, which was inspected and quickly placed in a terrarium with another of my treasures, Hoya Patella.
So thank you, AV forum people, for alerting this newbie about these nasty pest threats. I have been in a deep sweat ever since, inspecting all by "babies" to see if the infestation had spread. Looks clear, but I will keep my fingers crossed!

Actually, what you're talking about there sounds more like the foliar mealy bug problem that Anna described recently, http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/643009/
Isolation of the other two plants and keeping a close eye on any that may have been in contact with it are good ideas.
You're right, Jill. I will be watching the others closely.

Wow, did you get pictures, Don?
No, Kenton, I didn't. Never even thought about it. I was in such a hurry to get it the outside to the garbage barrel. It was very small, but definitely white fuzzy looking in the crown of this small strange looking plant. Since then, I have taken alcohol and Q-tiped the other two plants' leaves. The still look OK, but I have them isolated all the same.
Sure glad I started reading yours and Anna's threads.

I wish I weren't stuck in town today. It's friday, I need to spray the AVs. Won't get home until 9, but I'll probably do it tonight anyhow!
Yes I am very happy that you posted as well Kenton....could save us a lot of grief!
Well you can always spray tomorrow can't you? Do you think you will feel like spraying after 9 PM.....take a break and do it tomorrow. You deserve it!
Joanne
No, I'm tired, and its nearly ten and I'm not home yet...
Fridays were my days off, now I'm in a garden-day withdrawl. I run out hastily with my cup of tea in the morning to look at the mornign glories before I dash off , that's all I can do now. I shan't complain, I'll find time, even if I have to hog tie it to drag it home, seeing as I find time for quick DG checking-in.
Hi Kenton,
Sure hope they will be okay...you take time for yourself too, sounds like you are getting played out.
Joanne
It's been months now sense your treatment Knenon how are your plants ? And more trouble ? Do you have healthy new pictures of plants you treated ?
In short, the small number I grow now is sealed up in glass in a new area entirely.
In length:
The plants are well, I will post pictures when I have access to my pictures. In general, they just finished a bloom cycle, a few are restarting and have a few buds now. I have decided not to grow violets seriously anymore, they are not something that fits my lifestyle now. My collection is greatly reduced to just a few plants, a hundred violets were too much trouble. So I threw away several score of healthy (even blooming) plants, which really didn't make me feel guilty; I just don't need them.
Any more problems? Since the last posting above (this is just a guess) fungus gnats brought mites to two AVs from dormant tropicals on the other side of the room. There are pots of dormant plants (and soil...) and dozens of small trees, vines, seedlings, and perennials in small pots that I grow under lights that I grow. Some are outdoors in the summer so they naturally have myriads of organisms that they carry in their soil. I have too many places for things (that affect AVs and not other plants) to be harboured, and I'm not about to go spraying every plant I own with chemicals. I have just started my first spring sowing of more plants for next year's garden, I am an outdoor gardener first of all, (plus, I do that so much better!) and I am excited to grow some of the new seeds I've traded and sent off for.
The few AVs I am attached to that I am keeping now grow in nearly air-tight sterile glass boxes or glass jars (no fungus gnats can get in there) , and have been fumigated and doused in systemic as a precaution. They seem to like a humid environment better anyhow. I am only willing to take ridiculous measures for a small number of plants, when mine are not blooming, I'll just enjoy the pictures posted in the forum.
Kenton
