...but never black and white on the radar screen. When I clicked on the Vipir link and saw this, a shiver went through me!
X
I've seen yellow, orange, red, lavender and purple ...
I am shivering for you also and I am on the other side of the country. Wow. Does that mean sheets of rain?? Are you actually experiencing any of it or know anyone. I am very curious about this.
Please be careful...
Carat your moving to SC in alittle while aren't you? Get use to radar like that. We get some serious rain at times. Nothing to panic about, you do have to be safe about lightning.
Yes, I am moving there this January. That is why I want to know what it looks like for real. Any one that has any photos please post them. It amazes me the amount of water you get there. Here we get more then an inch in one day and we are floating down rivers and streams. The water doesn't absorb here, it just flows off through streets and takes everything with it.
Carat, you are going to see some humdingers of thunder storms; actually much worse than we see along the coast. Make sure your home is well grounded to protect your appliances. After losing several TV's to lightening strikes in our last home in the Midlands we discovered there was corrosion between the grounding pole and the ground wire (it runs between the meter box and the ground). Neither SCE & G nor the many electricians we consulted could figure it out, finally our teenager discovered and solved the problem. Kids like their TV's ya' know!
Worse still will be the ice storms which wreck havok on the loblollies. What a mess, broken tree trunks and branches everywhere.
In spite of our crazy weather, as the song says - nothing could be finer........
You will love it here!!!!!!
Have you chosen your colors yet? Garnet/Black or Orange????? ;-))))))))
Ah Jeeze Ardesia .. you forgot to tell her about the sun eating dragons, as well as the weekly dam breaks and giant mosquitoes that pick you up and fly away and lets not forget the Carolina Piedmont ogres that come down from the mountains & hide in your closet!
Not to worry Carat .. it's really not bad at all. Just a different climate than you will be accustom to. Ardesia is right though .. the ice storm can be tough, but they aren't all that common. What is nice about where you are moving too is that you will be able to grow things like tulips and peonies which Ardesia & I can't grow here. Doesn't get cold enough.
Here are some weather links in your area you might want to start looking at to see what's happening.

Thanks Ardesia and Xeramtheum, I know that the weather will be alot different and I have a picture of my house during an ice storm. We dont get alot of rain here in Vegas but the thunderstorms and lightening shows here are unbelievable. And with not as many trees to attrack the lightning houses are hit more.
Our house there is already well grounded. My next door neighbor is a lineman for Duke Power and this past July he came over and made sure that everything was correct. He has also offered to set up our generator if we go that route.
I started a journal to help remind me of the weather and events during this year so I can have something to look back at later to help me.
X, I do plan on a trip to Charleston hopefully the first summer that we are there, and thanks for the offer.
Tulips, lilacs, peonies, hosta's, and so many more plants that I have only been able to drool over will soon be able to be mine. I cant wait.
Xeramtheum your not supposed to tell anyone about the Dragons or Ogres. You should know that's our little secret. Shhh.
oh dear
Dont worry I really didn't believe her, although I am checking my closets before going to bed once I move. You know, just in case.
Should we mention the famous ghosts??????
I don't think she has to worry about that Ardesia, they are all along the coast .. besides our Low Country ghosts pale in comparison to the CP ogres. Except for maybe that little girl ghost who was buried alive in Edisto.
Edited to add a link to the story about the little girl.

:-)))))))))))))))), can't you just hear the creepy music and the wind howling...................
Carat, you will have to admit, there are few places as interesting as SC. And, after the first few thunder/ice storms you won't even bat an eye at them. Just everyday living in the best place n earth.
Savannah's a free for all with ghosts and your right about the coast. Ghost running around everywhere at night, howling etc just making a pest of themselves.
I don't know why people in Savannah seemed to have locked upped insane relatives in their attics. Seem to have been the thing to do a couple of hundred years ago.
As a ghost story and thunderstorm lover I can't wait! I've been in So Cal 9 years this month and in this whole time we've had 2 pathetic thunderstorms. I totally miss that ozone-sky-turn-green-hair-on-arms-stand-up-there's-gonna-be-a-big-one on summer afternoons.
I've been in Summerville since 2001 and have never gone sightseeing! I've been wanting to drive to Edisto Island and see the Legare mausoleum. According to mapquest I'm about an hour and a half away. Any of you Low Country denizens up for a road trip to meet in Edisto for lunch one Saturday?
X
WooHoo, well hold on tight, you are in for the ride of your life.
CoreHHI, you mean you are not supposed to lock up your crazy relatives in the attic??????
X, I love Edisto but have never been to any mausoleums; that sounds like fun. Core, I could meet you at Gardens Corner and we could carpool?
Did a little research .. there is a restaurant called the Old Post Office Restaurant just down the street from the Edisto Presbyterian Church where the mausoleum is.
Old Post Office Restaurant, 1442 Hwy, 174
Edisto Presbyterian Church, 1890 Hwy, 174
Since you've been there Ardesia perhaps you can recommend a nice place for lunch.

Is the Old PO open for lunch? It is supposed to be great but I thought it was a dinner place. The only place I have eaten is along the creek; nothing great but lots of arrogantly shabby atmosphere. I'll ask around for ideas.
I am tied up on weekends through the beginning of Sept. From the 9th on I am free at this point.
Maybe we should start another thread and reference Lowcountry gardeners????
alice
I was thinking the same thing .. and did!

Thanks for the invite Ardesia but I have a 3 year old and a 18 month old so I'm pretty limited time wise. That's why I'm here. I can tinker around the yard while the kids play so I decided to fill the yard up with interesting plants. I have to say this web site is great, no matter what you ask someone knows something about it. I have about an acre so I have room for many trees and plants, should keep me busy till the little ones get older.
Xeramtheum, Yikes but I wish I could send that one to my mom. You caught that right as it was over me! Mom didn't believe that my phone lines were out. A woman and her 4 dogs were hit and killed by lightning in that storm. It was really a strange one and we had no real warning. I have weather alert in my home and it never went off until the storm passed. I was sitting here working on the computer when the lightning flashed suddenly and then the crack of thunder. I immediately shut down and unplugged the computer. For half an hour I watched as it looked like lightning was hitting my backyard every few minutes. My poor dog was quivering. I usually love storms but that one was a humdinger! It was the first one to ever scare me!
Carat, as they said, we get some bad pop-up storms but in my 13 years in this house I have never seen one like that!! I have been in this house for 13 years but in Upstate SC for 31 years and never saw a storm with that much cloud to ground lightning!
Now as for those Low Country people :) giving away our secrets! Shucks! Well, they forgot to mention the "slap you in the face, suck the breath out of you" ogre that is here most of the summer. They are just trying to lure you down to haint country. And they have some real douzies (is that a real word?) down there! I have a bookshelf full of stories about them. When I was first told about the few local haints, I couldn't figure out what the heck they were talking about. It is a Southern word for ghost; and, believe me, Charleston has the best! Charleston is a definite "must visit often" city. It is beautiful, full of history, charming, and friendly. I love it. I just love my mountains a little more.
Hey Mollie, just right click with your mouse on the picture and save it to your computer! Be my guest!

Thanks so much! My Mom is still afraid of cell phones so you can image her and computers! But I would so love for her to see this. Heck, even I was impressed and I am a weather nut. I am going to visit her in Ohio soon and can either take my laptop or, if you don't mind, print the pix out and show her! She does watch the news so I know she will "get the pix". Again, thanks so much!
Lol .. print it if you like. I have no problems with that.
