Hi all,
Does anyone grow cardiocrinum lillies? I've heard once you have one that flowers you end up with hundreds of seeds. So why isn't dg full of people giving them away. This must be a myth!!
I been looking for seeds of this fantastic plant for 3 years. It seems the seed doesn't store well or something as packet bought seed never grows.
Any clues anyone?

a search on the net yielded a whole list of cardiocrinum seed sources
Thomson Morgan http://seeds.thompson-morgan.com/us/en/product/2710/1
Cardiocrinum.co in the UK http://www.cardiocrinum.co.uk/
There was a gardenweb person who was offering seed last fall if you go to Gweb and search on it
I didn't search DG perhaps same applies
You might ask Dr. Joe Halinar. He has had them in the past.
I think his website is http://www.lilyseed.com
If tht doesn't work, google either his name or Rainbow lilies or rainbow seedd. Bad memory here/

Hiya,
Thanks for the response. I've tried T&M seeds ( i stock the full range in my garden centre)
I suppose i was really asking for someone with fresh seed to swap. Ive tried T&M and it never seems to grow.
So i was really looking for someone with seed, that has grown from seed before and can help me get some started.
Mike
I think you are thinking of Rainbow Francom, inanda (lilyseed.com). I am not aware of Dr. Joe growing them (Cascade Bulb and Seed, here in OR not too far from me). You are right, Mike. You need to find someone who is actually growing them and knows how to store them (that wouldn't be T&M). Go to inanda's link and drop Rainbow an email. She may be able to put you on to the right person.
BTW I just purchased some L. shastense seeds from Rainbow and am looking forward to starting them this fall. She is very good at responding to email.
Hi,
Try Gardens North, they keep their Cardiocrinum seed in moist vermiculite so you get living seeds when you order them. Cardiocrinum has some fairly complicated germination requirements, but they are easily met if you get fresh or properly stored seed to begin with.

Hi Pardalinum,
Thanks for understanding what i'm after. But i'm based in England Uk. I've looked at sources in the Uk which are really expensive. So need someone friendly i can keep incontact with while i get these gowing. (also i'd like to swap seed rather than buy)
I know a couple of places i could just buy bulbs from, i'm not sure if that takes the fun out of it. Its kind of cheating.
So anyone that wan't to swap let me know.
Mike
mike, you didn't ask me! They say look closer to home......
Take a look in PlantFiles, I think I have left just about all the info you will want to know there in the comments.
Funny thing is, I had 2 plants flower over 2 years, the first year I sold seed really well on ebay. Last year I had tons, most of it viable, and I divided it into 5 really big lots at a cheap 'buy it now' along with some 5 year seedlings. I sold 2 lots and threw the rest of the seed away about a week ago!
It is a long job, and I know the feeling of needing to do it, or I wouldn't have done it! Very slow though, they take a year to germinate or 2, and have to be fresh. Don't believe the 7 years, much longer. It takes 4 or 5 years from offsets, but when you have your own the offsets will be bigger from a better established plant so could be sooner.
I do have a few offsets in the ground from last year's that I never lifted, I was going to do it this year. I really didn't think it would hurt them, and as the weather was so rotten last winter it was probalby the best thing to do, mid October was a rush just to get everything in that was tender. I think I can spare you some, you really don't want to wait 10-12 years.
Wow I think this is the one plant ireally want out of all plants ever.
I think its because its been a real struggle to find or get growing.
Please please please can you swap some with me????????
Ye OK, I'm an easy sort of person, hmmmmmmmmm, what can I do you for?
please send me some of them lovely bulbs. Have you looked through my seed list yet?
Yep, will dmail you!
Easy you say??!! Are you flirting now?? Lol
Oh boy, that was a delayed reponse! I am 'accommodating', not 'a common dating'!!!!!!
BUT, I may have to see what I can wangle out of you for those bulbs!
I'm starting to feel easy and dirty. Lol
Do like the play on words though.
Mike, where is your seed list. I Must be blind.
inanda
inanda, you don't wanna know, it's one of those business-like spread sheet things.
Then again, mike might like to show you his spread sheet.
Why can't people be normal and just throw them all in little pots and forget what they are!
mike, do you mean the wide leaf Cordyline indivisa, not the normal Cordyline australis?
http://www.rarepalmseeds.com/pix/CorInd.shtml
They say it's more hardy, but also more difficult to grow.
I have some C australis grown from a local tree, C indivisa I had thought of trying but I have always read it's more tender than C australis and only suitable for milder SW climate. The same with C Red Star, although people do grow that in pots here. You actually have one that has flowered?
Well all i can say is that i got them from italy and they are labelled dracena indivisia and drac ind red star so not a clue. The leaves do seem wider than most cordylines that are dutch grown. And there not doing ever so well compared to normal. And yeah flowers on a few and load of round seed pods with black seeds inside.
But i'm not promising anything about there name as i know the italians to well.
Dracaena indivisa is another name for Cordyline indivisa, we normally use the second here. Red Star is C australis Red Star.
Have you got some pics? If they were fairly mature they could easily flower, if they think they are about to die that will make them flower too!
These more tender plants are often hardier if you grow them yourself, in these conditions, in proper compost. If they are what they should be, it might be interesting to try just to see if they do well with my hard growing techniques.
Post some pics?
Mike - is that photo of a plant that might get you in a heap o' trouble? At least in the U.S.? Or do my old eyes deceive me.
Hmm..... I was thinking the same thing. Then I thought nah, Mike seems to be the type of bloke who is into very rare unknown species from the jungles of the Amazon River, you know.... where they are still finding new and exciting species. At least that is the story I would tell the cops if they found it growing in my backyard. Notice the high solid fence...
The fence is over 12 foot tall but thats to keep some neighbours out!
Its ok guys the plant i called Hibiscus Canabinensis Looks just ike th real thing now though don't it.
Think i'll post a pic in the main forum just for a giggle.
wallaby i'll try and get a pic for you if i remember my camara
they where doing ok until recently. I think it was lack of water then over water thats making them ill. There mll plants probably only 3ft tall. But the flower started in Italy before we got them here.
I have loads of seed so i'll hang onto some just incase.
