Hot Dog Toppings

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

A new discussion started (of all places) on the elevator at work. So I'd like to hear your opinions now.

What do you like on your hot dog? What do you like on your hamburger?

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

On my hot dog, I prefer a trash bag with a twist tie
so I can dispose of such a nasty thing properly.

On my burger, I'll take the following, please:

Cheese
Lettuce
Salt
Pepper
A huge pile of tomatoes on the side (we're talking the whole tomato)
Mayo on the side. I like to put a dab of mayo on each bite as I eat it.
Pickles on the side. Crisp. Spears.
And two napkins - One to wrap the burger as I hold it, one to wipe my mouth.

No wonder hubby hates eating out with me.

;-)

Hot Dog has to have Sauerkraut and Spicy Mustard, if Kraut is not availabe then it has to be replaced with chopped onions with the Spicy Mustard!

Hamburger would perfect with BBQ Sauce and Fried Onion's, bun must be toasted!

Oh yea, I would only need 1 napkin!! LOL

Hamburger, the works; mayo, pickle, tomatoes, lettuce, cheese. A place in Portland we patronize is famous for their huge burgers w/ fried egg. Fantastic!
Hot Dog: mayo, spicy mustard, onions, sauerkraut, cheese.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Question for anastatia. Mayo on hot dogs? Never tried it. I love mayo, so will give it a try. But what kind of cheese on the hot dog?

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Hot dogs...mustard only...but haven't had one in years..

Hamburger...It's called the Old Fashioned around here...lettuce, onion, pickles, tomato and mustard..

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

For those in the Southwest, do they still have those hot dog places, I think they were called Der Weinerschnitzel? I saw them in Southern Cal and El Paso in the late 60's.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

They do but you are seriously risking a heart attack Lol!

Horsens, Denmark

For hotdogs
Danish cucumber salat, fried onions (it is very chunshy like crisps), remolade (don`t know if you know this), ketchup and dijon mustard. Hmmm getting hungry, it is almost dinner time here, so maybe there will be hotdogs tonigth.
Found a photo of the danish version
http://www.tulip.dk/Consumers/Alverdens_hotdogs/Dansk_Hotdog.htm

If you click to the right you can see what this hotdog company sugest what to do with the hotdogs. They have maned them after different contries (don`t think they are eaten like that in these contries), but is is in danish :o( , will translate if anyone is interested. Maybe you can get some inspiration by looking at the photos, the mexican one looks good.

Hamburgers, no matter as long as it is home made and has ketchup :o))

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

nap, yep mayo. but that is just something I started in the last few years as I love mayo and we seldom have hot dogs. My dream of going to NY city and getting one (or two)of their famous street vendor hot dogs is still alive.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

On the dog - ketchup, mustard and pickle relish.

Or sauerkraut and mustard.

On the burger...it depends on where it's coming from.

Usually cheese pickle, mustard & lettuce. (Standard Krystal/White Castle flavor combination - even when it's not a square little thing from either of those places. Onions are optional.)

If it's a bacon burger, then tomatoes and mayo, no mustard or pickles (unless they're bread and butter pickles.)

Then again.......sweet onion, bread & butter pickle, tomato and ketchup on a burger isn't half-bad either.

Like I said....it depends ;o)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

dog - (either all beef Hebrew National or Vienna) - poppy seed roll toasted, dill pickle slice, 2 tomato quarters, mustard, celery salt. Can't go without the celery salt :)

burger - cheese, ketchup, lettuce, sweet pickle relish, mustard

Also been known to eat kraut and mustard only on a dog ;)

Hotdog ~ mustard, onions, & pickle relish!

On the Cheese! burger ~ cheese (doh), onion, & LTM ~ & bacon is good. I like to change it up a bit :)

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

Hotdog-beans and small bit of catsup.

Hamburger- Cheese, tomato, picante sauce.

Drool!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm going to have to try many of these. That link with various dog pics was interesting. The English one reminded me of what we call a 'whistle pig'. That would be the dog sliced open part way, stuffed with cheese whiz, and with bacon wrapped around it. On a bun, of course.

I love these answers.

And then there's the famous (infamous) chili cheese burger served by an eatery in my old hometown.

I should preface this by saying that Colorado and New Mexico take their chili seriously - none of that thick, goopy brown stuff with beans in it. (Texas chili has it's place - but it's place is not in either of these states. ;o) When you order chili, you're expected to know if you want red or green. (For the uninitiated, red is fiery hot with red chili peppers seasoning ground beef, while green is only slightly less spicy with chunks of pork and green chiles.)

Two freshly-made burgers are grilled, placed on a bun, open-face style, smothered in your choice of chili and topped with burn-your-mouth, fresh out of the fryer french fries, then sprinkled with shredded cheese.

A gastronomical delight, guaranteed to give anyone who eats it a serious case of acid reflux. I haven't had one of these chili cheese burgers in 20-some years, but I still dream of them ;o)

On the hot dog: Mustard, ketchup and raw diced onions.

If it's a brat type of dog, then saurkraut, swiss cheese and a spicy sweet type of mustard.

Burgers: Ketchup, mustard, sour pickle slices and a slice of red onion. NO CHEESE! Yuk. Cheese has it's place, but not on my burger. Or make it caliente style with sour cream and jalapenos.

Chili: Put it in a bowl and add some more jalapenos and raw onion, put some shredded cheddar on top. Have the Louisiana Hot Sauce handy in case it's not hot enough to suit my taste. Don't put it on my dog or burger though. Needs to be in a bowl on the side.

Camilla, GA(Zone 8a)

Hotdog.. Lots of mayo, mustard, onions, hot pepper jelly, chili and cabbage slaw..

I love a burger all the way.. lettuce, tomato, onions, cheese, mayo, pickles, catsup and mustard, occasionally mushrooms and bacon...

Every once in awhile I get a craving for a hb with only mayonnaise, cheese, garlic and homemade sweet & tart pickles, and the bun toasted crispy....

Larkie

A great way for hodogs without a bun is to slice lengthwise, fill with cheddar cheese(or any), place under broiler and melt cheese and brown a little..Then fill the weiner with mashed potatoes and place back under the broiler until golden brown.. This is really good and kids love it.

It must be a Jordan's red hot dog. 2 inches longer than a hot dog roll. I know they are not good for me. DW won't touch them. I like Jack Daniels mustard and Cains relish. Ketchup is for eggs or home-fries. Please check the Mt. Horeb Mustard museaum. I know I can't spell.

Cape May Court House, NJ(Zone 7a)

MT Herb Mustard Catalog is awesomeI have been getting it for a few year's!

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

Boy you all are making me hungry.

On the dog it has to be mustard, onion, chili and sour kraut.

On the burger lettuce, tomato, cheese, mayo, mustard and if I have them fresh jalapenos.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Anastatia, et al......check this out from the Mt Horeb Google search. It's interesting. ( He says he would never vote for a President who puts mayo on anything. )

nap, this is such a fun thread! It actually caused me to do some googling ;) Found a few things everyone might find interesting or just give a chuckle.

Here's the link, but I also copied some of the comments http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/HotDog/HDIndex.htm

The Spanish call them "perrito caliente," in Italian, it's "cane caldo," the French refer to them as "chien chaud," Germans call them "Heisser Hund," and the Dutch have dubbed them "worstjes.

And a street cart vendor's 'cry' up in Connecticut 1895:

ECHOES FROM THE LUNCH WAGON
"'Tis dogs' delight to bark and bite,"
Thus does the adage run.
But I delight to bite the dog
When placed inside a bun.

Thanks again for the thread!

Dea, LOL!!:->>>>

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Yeah, it's fun, but I'm so hungry for a hot dog right now.......

Peterstown, WV(Zone 6a)

Me too!! :-)) but it's Sunday mornin'... and not a dog in the house! ((;-)))

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Great Dea! That little diddy put a smile on my face already this morning. As I was reading your post I was wondering if your crew at work was going to have a hot dog buffet on August 31st?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

Great idea Joan !

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

GREAT IDEA!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

Frank - what do those red ones taste like? I google a picture and they look fascinating! If there's red dye in them, well so be it; guess just once won't hurt and I've had my share of red velvet cake ;)

Have you ever tried "Nathan's" hot dogs? They're all beef; long....Yummmmm! :-)) We saw them & had to try them, because that's my brother's name. Glad we did...they're the best that we have ever "ett". :-)

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Well, I think I prefer Sahlen's natural casing hot dogs. Or Wardynski's. Maybe those aren't available everywhere, I don't know. We've had Nathan's, but our local brands are much better. Honest.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

nap, NY is hot dog aficionado country. I will look those up. I am sure there are Nathan's around here but just have to find and try. Will put my lab coat on when I eat one so it will be official.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

You know what this thread did? We were on our way back from taking our baby to college and stopped for gas. What did I see? Hot dogs! So, although it wasn't a very good one with all the fancy trimmings, I just had to have one with ketchup, mustard, saurkraut and onion. If I would have left without it, I would have thought about it all night. :)

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I'll bet you laughed out loud when you saw Hot Dogs! Too funny!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Yeah, then I had to explain the sudden obsession to DH. LOL

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Okay, here's the scoop on Sahlen's.......
