Pinus sylvestris Beuvronensis

Lombard, IL(Zone 5b)

Does anyone have a pic of a decent sized plant. I got a 5 Gal at HD for cheap the other week but couldn't find much on the pine except that in time it might start growing faster and larger.

It's a dwarf for the most part Bill. 3-4 inches per year and globose under ideal conditions.

The American Conifer Society lists varying growth rates, but once established you might see anywhere from 1-3 to 4 inches of annual growth per year.

You can check the 'Conifer Database' for photos but you'll need to manually pull the record up. Here's a link for you - Dax

I read in Bloom that in time, once the roots get happy, that it outgrows this dwarf growth rate. From the pics I might disagree, but they don't say how old. I keep forgetting about that database. Thanks

The UK champ is 9m tall. I've seen a few old ones 4-5m tall, they don't look very good.

Well, if they stay around the 4" rate, then I guess I can plant wherever I want. I just wanted to make sure it didn't get a growth spurt in year 5 or so and outgrow its location. Still a good bargain at HD for 50% off.

Thanks

Yep Yep!

Place sylvestris 'Fastigiata' in this 'unsightly' group as well but 20 years is where fastigiata declines severely (hence better cultivars at present). Your 'Beuvronensis' will look good for many years of course.

Enjoy your new plant!

See ya,

Oh goody -- I smell PWN already, and you haven't even planted it yet . . .

Yes Guy, I asked the person at HD about the nematode and he said that he believes I am safe (I should have just for the dumbfounded look I would have received). If your nose is that good, can I borrow you for truffle hunting?

For the price I paid, I can sacrifice it to the nematode gods to have mercy on any future sylvestris plantings.

I have a few here too. Lost a few already. Figure I'll lose the rest soon enough. Oh. well.

Are any of the japanese pines being affected here, in particular densiflora, or is it mostly sylvestris? You must have lost a lot of plants in your day to be so zen about it. I still curse any loss or animal damage, and I think I am pretty laid back.

It's not zen, it's depression! I curse it too, but what ya gonna do? Scots and Austrian seem to be the big losers, but densiflora reportedly is about as susceptible.
