Saving seeds from MG's

Paris, TN(Zone 6b)

I'm really ignorant on this, and if it's covered in another place somewhere, please just point me there :) I have one really nice purple plain jane MG that faithfully comes back and I'd like to plant more. But where do I find the seeds to collect them? Right now I've been catching tiny new plants on the ground and moving them to pots with trellises, and they seem to be doing okay. I'd like to plant some more for next year.

Also, I'd like a good pink seed recommendation from you experts here. I think pink and purple would look good together on my fence around the yard.

Thanks for your help and advice!

-Sunny

When the flower withers and drops off, there will be a spherical seed capsule that develops. It will be green at first, then with time (maybe a month) it will turn paper bag brown and crispy brittle. That is when you can harvest the seeds, not before. Have fun!

Thanks Joseph,

Now I have extra things to do in the morning on my 'coffee' walk. I'll have to scope them out tomorrow.

I appreciate your help :)

This is one that I found out on the fence today. Is it ready? I had to kind of pull it off the vine, so I wasn't sure if I took it too early. It appears to be the right item, just maybe too early yet.

Thanks for taking a peek!

Sunny,

Looks like a keeper; you should be able to break out the seeds from the capsule by pressing your index finger and thumb together over the capsule. The seeds should be dark color, black or brown, and not green. Way to go!

Yup, one big black seed...YAY! DH was sooooo happy I discovered this (not). He thinks of MG's as a weed because we have never trained them, we just let them go. Wild suits me fine, but I'm learning to give them more definition in their climbing habit to keep him happy :)

Any suggestions for a good pink Joseph, or others? I'd like a nice contrast for this purple with pink throat.

Thank you,
-Sunny

You can do a search on the term ipomoea in DG plant files, then you can see pictures of them and decide for yourself...beauty is in the eye of the beholder, someone famous said that once.

Lakeland, FL(Zone 9b)

It was Plato who said that . Regards Paul

I told you it was someone famous. LOL

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

Joseph...shame on you :0)) Sending a unsuspecting victim to Plantfile rotflol. You know that is even worse addictive then to be on this forum when you see ALL the MG:s posted there.
Sunny:
I bet about this time next year your fence will NOT just have a pink added to the beauty you already have. Your fence will be in the colour of the rainbow and hopefully your hubby wont be bald ripping his hair out when he finds out how many different kinds of "weed" there is.
Janett

I know, Janett, the Plantfiles forum is a veritable smorgasbord of temptations! LOL

Paris, TN(Zone 6b)

I'm punch drunk with the colors, shapes and varieties!....Joseph, I solidly lay the blame on you for my newfound adoration of all things MG.

Janett, I'll just have to see how many seeds I can sneak in here and there, or possibly a plant or two, to see if I can stick to only a rainbow's palette ;)

Again, thanks for the help from you pros!

Sunny-
if you would like some, I can send seeds from my pale pink MGs. I haven't gotten a definite ID on them yet but they are pale pink with cream colored seeds and fuzzy stems and leaves. They grow much faster than all of my other morning glories so they should grow like weeds for you :)

Katlian, I would LOVE some, thank you! That color is delightful and I love fast growers :)

I'l send you a dmail.

Happy gardening,

Portagee, thank you also! I love the way you have yours, I'll dmail you and maybe you can give me some tips on your style of growing.

I can't wait until next year when I can send MY seeds to everyone.

(p.s. Is this called "enabling"...LOL!)

Thank you,

how do you store the seeds for the winter ~ do you just put them in envelope and store in a draw. i can't replant until the end of next may where i am, how long will the seeds keep? sorry about all the questions ~ i'm pretty new to the mg thing ~ Sherry

Sherry,
I stored my seeds in a drawer over the winter and they did just fine this spring.

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Sherry1961 - keep the seeds cool/cold and relatively dry...

I got hooked on MGs and Ipomeas, adding a new one each year for the last 10 years. .The first year I had no idea how they would grow, I saw the photo on the package of "Heavely Blue" and just threw them around a Bradford Pear tree in the front yard. By July they had climbed all the way to the top, (about 24 feet). it was an awesome site and I was hooked from then on.
Since then I have planted, "Pearly Gates", "Granpa Ott" (The purple ones with the redish pink throat), and "Scarlet O'Hara". The Scarlet O'Hara are a very bright color of pink actually and Hatsu Japanese MG are fabulous color of royal blue-violet!! I also have grown the Tri-Color Convolvulaceae & Cypress Vine, and still learing a lot about what NOT to do, LOL.
I have found that all Ipomoeas do best when starting them indoors way before last frost, (late Jan-Feb). For instance, this year I planted my Moonvines (Which bloom in evening instead of morning), really late, and I am only just now getting blooms and the blooms are not doing near as well as in the previous 4 years. Also, my son planted some HBlue MG's at the end of first grade this May and they still haven't bloomed, yet the GOtt MG's sowed themselves from last year and I have hundreds of them now, go fig:)! GOtt are the most evasive of all imho, your husband might like Pearly Gates which are much easier to control, and they look beautiful with the purple.

Photo here is of the GOMG's that fell on good enough ground with no help from me..lol.

Yes Deb, the Otts got me hooked ~ I inherited them when I rented this house. This year, I also got a Moonflower. Then I discovered they come in all sorts of colors, sizes, countries...LOL!
And thanks to many great traders and SASBE'ers, I'll have a small rainbow this time next year :)

Oh dear, what's a Tri-Color Convolvulaceae???

Your GO's are lovely. I like mine in the mornings...

Hineni-Sunny - >debnes_dfw_tx probably meant Convolvulus tricolor...

ROFL! I was wondering if someone would correct that, and ~Ron I am glad you knew how to spell that one..Convolvulus, Dwarf MG..
Can't get anything by you garden-webbers {;-D= BWS

Sunny~Here's a pic of some I grew last year,
It isn't a vine, but blooms once each day in sort of a compact bushy fashion. I really like them a lot but still could use more tips from experts like Ron, lol.

Here are a few MG pics from the last few years..

This unusual Scarlet O'Hara didn't have a white throat, only a few came out that way. Maybe one of the other readers can explain this to both of us.:-)

Another Scarlet with a more typical white throat..

Pearly Gates MG are nearly the size of the Moonflowers, though much more delicate..

I loved the morning glory tree idea so much I went with it the next year with G Otts all up in the Redbud..It made a purple canopy on top of the tree.

i will stop with that for now..

They come in dwarf sizes too? Oh mercy...I'll have to dig up the grass (err weeds) in the lawn to have space for all of these! I have evolvulus (sp?), but Ron told me it doesn't seed :( It's a gorgeous blue too.

I love those baby blue/white/yellow Convolvulus tricolor (cut and pasted from Ron for spelling accuracy..heh)

I found a lot of new seedlings of the GO's that I am moving to a big container. I have one that I moved about a month ago and it's blooming already! And it's only one little vine.

I just really like these plants :)

Happy long weekend everyone!

debnes_dfw_tx - Nice photos...although,it looks like sepals disagree with some of the species ID's...

The Ipomoea nil you have listed as Scarlett O'Hara here
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/debnes_dfw_tx_1157149225_317.jpg
has a nice color...when you say that 'only a few' came out that way...do you mean that you got blooms on the same exact plant(!) that had both solid and white throats(?)...or that only a few plants produced blooms with solid throats(?)

The flower posted here
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/debnes_dfw_tx_1157150112_472.jpg
has nice color, but the sepals look like Ipomoea purpurea to me...

also has a nice color, but the sepals are not Ipomoea tricolor, but Ipomoea nil
