Hi,
Is it too early to plant my crocus sativus bulbs here in the Pacific Northwest? Are pots ok for these?
saffron crocus
I'm not sure if pot culture works for them, but late summer/ early fall is the recommended planting time for fall crocus. Brent&Becky's ships them earlier than the rest of the fall bulbs for this reason. I've read they often bloom soon after planting.
Thanks Gemini:) I guess I'll wait a little bit.. What happens if they ARE planted too soon? Do they just not do anything till the time is right or does it actually harm them? On a side note-I was born in KY:) I like out here in Washington but I sure miss those thunderstorms and lightning bugs!
Your saffron will do okay in pots, they do better in the ground. They only bloom for a couple weeks at best, the rest of the time they are just clumps of grassy foilage. They are hardy in the Sea-Tac area. I would worry about them if you have a long hard freeze. If the pots freeze for a long time you may lose them. It is freezing and thawing and freezing again that will do them in. In the ground the temps don't change quickly so they adapt. Good luck.
Here is a plant that would have to grow inside-
Thanks for the info, Dale:) That's a lovely plant, indeed!
