I need to do some restorative pruning on a grouping of 10 Spirea 'Gold Flame' that have got really scraggly looking. I was hoping I could cut them way down (in spring) and let them come back from the crown like a forsythia. But I'm not finding consistent information on this specific variety of spirea. Anyone out there done this? Did it work?
Restorative pruning for Spirea 'Gold Flame'
I have cut mine down to 2' off the ground but they were only 5 to 7 years old and they restored very well the next year. The representative cut was about 40 to 50 %.
