Saving seeds from Lupines

Williamstown, MA

Should seeds saved this fall be kept in a cold area this winter? Is this necessary for them to germinatein the spring?
I have never done this before.

I am fairly certain that these seeds need a cold spell, or stratification. You can do this by stroring them in an unheated shed or garage, or sow them outdoors in Autumn. I hope this helps :)

Hi
Sow lupins and other early flowering perennials in the autumn and late flowering perrenials in the spring. Autumn sown plants make flowering size the folowing year. Lupins don't come true from seed.
Wait until seed pods turn black before picking. Store hardy perennial seeds in the fridge.
Soak seeds in warm water over night. Sow in free draining compost and cover lightly.
Hope that helps.

I've been looking at the seed sowing threads and, Mike, see that you are quite knowledgeable!

What does it mean when a plant "doesn't come true" from seed? My nephew gave me Lupine seeds that he got for me in Argentina and they did very well, although only one plant survived the winter. Of course, the little tiny package that they came in didn't have any information whatsoever. Sure was fun, though - and the one that survived bloomed purple with a tiny touch of white at the ends. Might be the wild one that grows just about everywhere?

That means it won't look like the mother plant, it can even be a different color. Correct me if I am wrong Mike :o)

Thanks, Connie - and I guess as much as I love any plant I ever see, it won't much matter if it's not true!!!

Mike, I've been gardening for years - you'd think I would have known what that meant, but I didn't!! Your Lupine is beautiful - I'd be thrilled if any of my purple ones showed up pink!

Thanks to both of you for helping me out.
