EE Issues

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

After fighting with C. esculenta for years - and still dealing with it popping up all over the place, I assumed I could grow EE's with some success. Apparently it is only the weedy ones I have good luck with.

This is A. culcullata; why is it all trunk and no leaves?

And this is Limelight. I thought everyone could grow this one.

Marginal luck with this one; it has been much larger in previous years. The lack of rain has held this one back this year I suspect.

They have all received plenty of fertilizer and supplimental irrigation but because of our high water table the tree roots grow out rather than down and the trees grab all the moisture.

My soil is heavy, with a Ph on the 6 to 5.6 range and there is an abundance of naturally occurring Phospherous in the soil.

Anyone have any ideas

The second one is a real beauty. I love your part of the world.

Thanks Linda, why do you suppose the LZ made all those babies and no large leaves?

It is bad enough I can't grow brugs; I am going to develop a complex (or a reputation as a plant abuser) if I can't grow EE's either. :-(((((

My LZ is in a pot, that what I blame for the small size I'm getting. This fall I'm going to clear an area that is not doing well, add lots of compost and put some of my ears there. I have lots of shade and it's hard to find a spot where they get at least an hour of sun. I've all but given up on brugs. This winter I will let most of mine go.

I think your big one might be Sarian.

I also think Cucullata is awful at making all tuber and little leaf especially as it gets older. Newer ones that I planted recently have foliage growing at ground level but the one I have had a few years just gets a longer tuber. LOL

How much sun are they in where you have them? What zone are you in? Personally I have found that when the big bulb dies out, you will get a bunch of babies like that. Could the big one possibly have rotted or froze? Since some send out runners and others make babies on the big bulb, that could be your answer.

There are others that know a whole lot more than I do and may have better answers for you.

The one with the white veins and stripped stems is Alocasia Sarian it is a species.
