CLOSED: Insect thing.

Bessemer City, NC(Zone 7b)

I was checking on some calla seeds and found this tube-of-leaves thing inside the closed blossom. The leaves were very fresh, kept moist in the folded bloom, though they are drying out now that I've removed it. Even the end is covered in little leaves that seem to be from the flowering crab nearby.

What is in there? Friend or foe?

without the picture, I'd say a leaf roller, How long is the thing?

Bessemer City, NC(Zone 7b)

It *was* about two inches long. I opened it up and found several compartments with an orange goo and a tiny white worm in each. There were many crosswise dividers along the length, little round cutout leaves.. I smashed the thing on the steps and a little while later, the mess was covered in little ants. Good goo, I guess.

lol, Robert, it was a nursery of some sort - course, I just can't sqash things like that! ewe!
Maybe a leafcutter babies' room? And in response to your original question, FOE.
