Flock of migrating gardeners, last seen heading east

HERPST,
I think the politically correct crowd would disagree with you re: poor bluelytes.

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8b)

Skidivur,
Oops, Hope I didn't step in something re: bluelytes. I thought that (s)he was the new correct pronoun replacing the formerly grammatically proper he. It seems more economical than doing the he/she, his/her thing. If you were referring to bluelytes opinions, I must admit that since I've only been a member since late June of this year, my experiences have been quite limited. Please enlighten me.

HERPST,
Sorry, unable to enlighten at this time in this location. :(

Ski - That's why Dave made Dmail.

Precisely. And enquiring minds want to know. We like to know with whom we are joking around. Otherwise, we might inadvertently put our proverbial feet in our proverbial mouths. And they taste extremely bad.

HERPST,

Did I forget to post this before, or did it get eaten?? I had posted that I would prefer contact at my regular e-mail, (my name @ yahoo.com) rather than d-mail, well, at least for the purposes of this thread. Thanx.

Hey I miss you guys and have been commisurating with all of we "mountain people" who have to build their soil and find a way to keep our gardens alive during the drought of Aug and Sept. My well has gone dry and my plants are now over 5 weeks without irrigation and they are mostly still alive and doing OK. You guys who never really need to irrigate have us envious when plants we have nurtured and slept with are drooping and dying. I am in a depressed state cause I am up in Alaska working while my plants die. My DW has put up a heroic fight for water and has kept the ones alive that we have given personal names. When I get home I am going to get a trailor with a water tank to pump out of the river and bring it home to my thirsty ones. I have talked to a well digger for our own personal garden well and it will cost over 60K for the drill and pipe and only to hope it flows for what we need. I hope you guys send me bottled water for christmas and maybe I can keep 1/3rd of what I have alive. Life is tough in the rocky mountains.
Hey I am up on Kodiak Island and out in front of my house is a trap for a great white shark that is tormenting the sealions in the area. Can you imagine a great white over 18 ft eating in the Alaska waters. Global warming is well advanced. It was seen here by several neighbors and they have been chumming the trap (30' X 20') to catch the villian. Fish and game have been trying to catch the villian in the waters of Gulf of AK. Weird.

Sofer!! We felt so abandoned!!! Glad to hear from you, but so sorry to hear about the drought (although I must remind you that we in western WA do not get any appreciable precipitation during the summer. Nada. I have to water every couple of days or things die.)
What are you doing in Alaska? Great white sharks? That far north? What are you working on?
I wish I could send water for Christmas! I think you need your own large water tank! If you lose things, let us all know so we can contribute to the cause!
Tell us more about this beautiful place and this horrible monster shark! Global warming, indeed!

Yeah Pixi I am a traveling Vet who has been coming up here for over 2 years. It is a beautiful island and a wonderful place to work. My vet who hires me has a house on the water and 5 days ago they set up a big orange floating box. When our neighbor went out to find out what they were doing they told her they suspected a great white shark and were planning on catching it. There have been a couple of sealions partially eaten drifted up on our beach so they suspected a great white. The killer whales always eat all of the carcass. Lots of them here and we see them often. But when they were out filling the bait box in the trap a 18' great white was challenging the float and the guy had to get in the boat and leave. I have seen them filling the box every other day to catch the shark. I remember that the GWS never came up to the PNW until about 15 yrs ago. and they were seen on the Oregon coast. Now they are up here. I am trying to get a photo of me swimming near the trap. What a rush. I would be the first one from my home town in Michigan eaten by a GWS. If not what a picture to tell my grandchildren. So now living in Kodiak has both of the biggest predators. GWS and Kodiak bears. What an adventure.

The bears I would love to see. The shark I can do without. Please do not get eaten!! Yes, I remember when I first heard reports of great white sharks in the San Fransisco area, then in Oregon. If the local people suspect a great white shark, does that mean that they've had others in the recent past? It's more than a little big frightening to say the least. I wonder what Puget Sound will be getting in the years to come?
How wonderful to have a profession that allows you to travel to such beautiful, off-the-path places! I do hope you get plenty of photos of the kodiak bears! And all the lovely scenery there! (to post here, of course!)

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I have posted a lot in many of my other areas. I cannot on this trip cause I did not bring my camera or my disk with the photos. Sorry I have some here on this computer though. this is just in front of the house. Grey whale.

Great pic, Soferdig!!

I have been up here many times and have never seen a Kodiak bear. They wander around the perimeter of town and occasionally in. My first trip I was lunching in a forest on an island nearby and after falling asleep I awoke and went back to work. Well the next day in the paper they had pictures of 2 bruins swimming out to my island and walking through the area I slep. That would have been a rude awakening! This island is a wonder land of beauty and it is the greenest green I have ever seen. More than over in the olympics. The ground here is covered in sedums, cow parsnips, many alpine wild flowers, fire weed, berry bushes, and a monoculture of Sitka Spruce that would make your eyes pop out with the heavy mosses hanging from the branches. I am fortunate that some one would fly me up here and give me their home just to help their clients and patients. God is good.

Yes, He certainly is! I can practically smell the air with your description. It sounds lovely and peaceful. I hope you have a wonderful time and get out of there before snow flies! I think I would love Alaska in the summer, but I wouldn't do well with all the winter darkness. It's not even the cold that would get me. It's the interminable dark. I feel it more every year.
I do hope you get to see a bear - from afar. They are such outstanding animals. Too bad your dw cannot make the trip with you, but then there would be no one to tend the plants at home!

Nice temporary quarters you have there, Soferdig!

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8b)

What a gorgeous house! Love the letter "i" windows! Wow! a great white shark & you without your red robe! Yikes! Is that you, Soferdig, in the fishing picture? (thought that you were older - must be your wisdom)

We have missed you here in the PNW.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Hey you are right can't swim until I get a red robe. Thanks that would have been a disaster. No that is my guide and my fishing assistant. I never get dirty lifting big king salmon. I did catch the King though.
Missed you guys too. But I didn't think I left just forgot to watch. Steve.

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

The greenest green you've ever seen is in Seattle , remember that show... late 60's maybe.
Dont want to see any big bears, or GWS's in person, never never never!!!! Dont wade, swim, or fish in and water that has something that can eat me in it.

Ski,
I'm on North K street close to Tacoma General.

Marysville, WA

HERPST,
NO WAY!!?? I could drive there with my eyes closed!! lol Is that drive in still there?? Zippos?? Or something with a Z

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

Herpst, I bet I've driven by your house very slowly looking at your garden. We (DH and I) used to roam the streets searching out neat yards, to see what we wanted to plant. I love those old houses up in that area. Always wanted a wrap around porch with a swing. Do you have one?

Viv

Hey, I hope no one is dissing the bob! He was my favorite! Next to Donnie Osmond, that is. "Go away little girl, go away little girl, I'm not supposed to be alone with you..." Geez! it's a wonder I ever grew up normal. I think.
This thread is WAY off track! We are getting extremely good at that!

Marysville, WA

PIXYDISH,
HERPST STARTED getting it off track with his Bobby Shermans greatest hits post.

Why are you still up? Didn't I tell you to go to bed hours ago? Don't make me get my rather large rear end off of this chair and come make you go to bed at a reasonable hour. Never mind what I'm doing. That is not the issue here.

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8b)

Ski,
Frisko Freeze? Yup. Driving with your eyes closed again? Listen mister, you are going to get a ticket or worse yet, hurt someone with your antics! I'm telling Pixydish!

Vizz8,
If you were driving slowly, it probably wouldn't have been to look at the dead grass that you can see from the street. Perhaps you were trying to figure out why any sane person would paint their house these colors. Ya got me. I'm not sane but my therapist, Pixydish, still holds out some hope for my normalcy. She's such an optimist.

Pixydish,
Define normal...Bobby Sherman and Donny Osmund were just dreamy!
Vizz8 and Skidivur started the WHOLE thing with the "Here come the brides", "Seattle" talk. I was only answering their questions so that they would stop talking and let me go to sleep. AND while Skidivur was bothering you with his wee hours tattling, I was fast asleep as you instructed. You let him get away with murder!
