Shade and/or Late bloomers

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I'm looking for any lilies that tolerate shade and I am also looking for lilies that might bloom at a time other than early summer... any suggestions?

Thanks,
Donna

Lilies tend to lean toward the sun in full shade, and also it is my experience that they decline as well. If you have a part shade situation, where you have 3 or 4 hours of sun, then that is a different story. They would do fine in that situation. The lilies that I have here that bloom the latest are Uchida, Black Beauty and Henryi.
Martigons do well in shady spots. They tend to be a more expensive purchase and a bit trickier to grow. They are very beautiful, but take more patience than most other varieties.

The latest blooming asiatics are
August Orange
Pt. Alberni Tiger
Yellow Blaze
Yellow Star
And a citrinum variety. Can't remember the name. Will have to think on it.

I needed to have lilies in bloom the 3rd weekend of August for many years. These are aklways in bloom then, as long as they get quite a bit of shade.

inanda,

Thanks for the info. I see you're in MB, wonder if they'd be about the same here in FL. Down here, things are a little different.

Florida, that is indeed a different story. I think, you couldtry growing in pots. Try burying pots in the ground for your lily bloom time (Dont know when tht is) . For sure think you would haveto put pots in fridge for the winter(12 weeks) to vernalize them. Think you should try the warm lilies like formosum, priceii, and some non-lilium like agapanthus, lycoris, eucomis. Don't even bother with martagons. They wont work at all for you.

Do some researhc on the web and see what other warm lilies there are. You need ones that grow in hot, low altitudes. My Mom lived outside Jacksonville for many years. Know there is a good garden club there (maybe at Penney Farms) cant remember. You should ask them or ask your Agri agent - can't remember what they call them in the US>

inanda who MUST remember to see where people live before replying.

Some places also sell pre-cooled lilies for spring planting. I know of several people who treat lilies as annuals. I don't think I could do that unless I lived in a warmer climate.

Here in Manitoba lots of people treat orientals as annuals and replant every year. Not me. I cover mine with a bag of leaves after snow arrives. Seems to work so far but need to try it for 5 or 6 years to see if it really works.

Ramona, without any mulch or ANYTHING to protect it in the winter??? Oh, just wnet ansd looked at your zone - 5b. Are you on/near the coast?

BTW, nice that you actually had kept the sales info and picture of your beautiful Soprano.

Another BTW, are you going to have any species available this year? I'll be in US after digging season so you wouldn't have to ship across the border. You can dmail me.
