I have just discovered this wonderful landscaping tree. I am not sure I have room for one but do like it and the flower is pretty and scented.
peanutbutter tree
I'm not sure if you mean this plant: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/102568/index.html (Peanutbutter Tree) or
Peanut butter shrub (Melianthus major). If its the latter, I have grown quite a few and find that if its placed right with good drainage can overwinter in our zone. The shrub can get 6-8' and gives off a peanut butter smell when brushed. I'm still looking for a jelly plant to go with it.
I've also heard Clerodendrum trichotomum called Peanut Butter tree/shrub
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/772/index.html
That the one I have Ecrane Clerodendrum trichotomum. I have 3 seedlings from my friends tree. (Quite prolific) I am putting them in 3 locations of my garden next year.
My friend has them popping up all around the original tree so keep that in mind when you place them in 3 seperate locations.
ecrane3, that's it. lots of shoots to get starts is how people I know got theirs.
Shoots or seedlings? I saw the ones at the garden of my friend and they had no runners just many seedlings.
I thought they said 'shoots' but shoot! maybe they didn't!
My neighbour planted it in a shaded spot and the blooms weren't very pronounced, it got lankey and seedlings were popping up all over the place. I listened to him swear about it yesterday so keep that in mind. In a more exposed/sunny spot the blooms have better colour and I've seen them placed in a dryer spot next to a parking lot and it worked very well. The seed colour being porcelain blue is really neat.
ps. I haven't heard it called the Peanut Butter Tree as its normally called "Glorybower" or "Harlequin Glorybower" and the Peanut Butter Shrub is normally referred to Melianthus.
It's called peanut butter because that's what you would smell when a leaf is crushed. And yes, it suckers like crazy (eventually). I used to live with one... like an 'ex'.

Steve, I'm very surprised they can take your zone 4 winters. Ours is getting ready to bloom now, but it died to the ground the first two years I had it planted outside.
Guy S.
I had C.trichotomum - harlequin glorybower/peanut butter bush -planted here in z6. Grew nicely the first year, then froze to the ground. Re-grew, and seemed to be doing fine through two more winters, even bloomed lightly last year, but set none of the showy fruits that I thought were its principal redeeming feature. Showed no sign of life this spring, and I presumed it to be dead; but in the last couple of weeks, I'm seeing suckers popping up in the lawn as far as 6-8 ft away from the dry, dead trunks of the original.
Guy I think that it will not grow here but why not try? I got the seedlings for free and I have zone 6 stuff everywhere doing well. I you know sleep with my Full moon when it is cold. LOL
Is that her name? Full Moon?
Oh my word, this thread is breaking up badly. The full moon right now is called "Red Moon" or Grain Moon. Look at it tonight--it is gorgeous.
Thanks for the tip, Gorgeous!
;-)
Good one Guy! Her name is DW and she lets me full moon. Therefore the name. yes I would guess that there is a full moon but up here in Alaska you have to stay up late to see it.
