CLOSED: What type of caterpillar/ butterfly is this???
It's gonna be a moth, and it's called a "bagworm" or "bag worm". Info here... http://davesgarden.com/bf/go/259/
A little more info from some folks closer to you at the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources... http://www.ohiodnr.com/forestry/health/bagworms.htm

you should read this thread too! and in the meantime, pick them off and throw them away as fast as you can! http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/625134/
Bagworms can be highly damaging or can even kill a plant, so normally I get rid of them without a second thought.
But I gotta say that your picture shows the most beautiful bagworm coccoon I've ever seen!
Ray
Stomp on them before you throw them away...'cause they can still crawl back.
Bagworms are nasty and cause a lot of damage. Cut it off and stomp it.
Would you please consider adding your beautiful picture to Bug Files ? :) Great shot!
