What type of butterfly will this be.... many have eaten on my Japanese maple and made cacoons all over it

It's gonna be a moth, and it's called a "bagworm" or "bag worm". Info here... http://davesgarden.com/bf/go/259/

Bagworms can be highly damaging or can even kill a plant, so normally I get rid of them without a second thought.

But I gotta say that your picture shows the most beautiful bagworm coccoon I've ever seen!

Bagworms are nasty and cause a lot of damage. Cut it off and stomp it.
