Does anyone know what kind of huge horrible spider this is?

Okay, I have a bit of arachnophobia myself, but I'm not sure I'd refer to that as "horrible", even if it is huge. What you have looks like a Dolomedes tenebrosus, one of the fishing spiders. They don't usually bite humans, which is good because they don't make webs, but go hunting. They can catch small fish or other prey and have even been known to eat slugs occasionally.

Thank you very much..it sure looks like that is what it is. Glad they don't "usually" bite humans but he /she is dead now anyway. Hope no husband around. The young man who is building my deck killed it (he also took the picture). Interesting information at any rate....thanks again. Nancy
