So is this the idea of a weather forecaster's joke on us?
Are we supposed to wear hooded jackets?
The sweat is pouring off me and I've been in the shade!
Oooh! How I'd love to chain them all up in their winter outfits and let them feel their "cool front" as they work in the garden!
Cool front sweeps in: NOT!
Do I ever hear ya....it has been so hot during the last few weeks - crazy hot! I can't stand this kind of heat...thank god we got c/a installed this year. I don't know how I lived without it before LOL. Just try to stay cool and enjoy your gardens :)
I just came in and showered. The last hour was horrific. Is this all a perverted joke by the weather people?
A cold front came through here yesterday afternoon, from Maine. It was in the 60s last night, in the 70s now. I slept under the covers last night with the windows open, AHHHHHH. (Sorry)

Dang it Pirl - you're on to my sidejob now.
The humidity has cleared up here and slightly cooler so maybe you will get some in a day or two.
Back to work, Saturday will bring partly sunny conditions followed by partly cloudy.
Andy, if I get hold of you I'll force you to wear a helmet in 85 degrees! You are such a tease!
Al, partly cloudy works for me. I had that for a few hours but too many were too sunny and too hot for what I expected of a cold front.
Pirl, after dealing with 100 degrees without AC, it sure feels good.
I couldn't help myself. LOL.
Andy P
OK. I'll let you off easy this time.
Next time................a helmet in 100 degrees!
Look I live up North in Canada where a lot of you think we live in igloos and ride on dogsleds LOL However let me tell you our weather has been HOT HOT HOT this summer - Wow I can hardly believe it.....I know you American's use F but we use C and it has been near 40 celcius with the humidex which is just gross. I don't mean to complain about the heat but I would honestly take a bit cooler weather anyday.
Dawn - it's just too tempting not to reply. Better by Dmail.
Pirl, Are you finding tonight cooler? During the day, the weather was a slight improvement over yesterday here, but tonight it really improved. First time I've been comfortable at the computer in a while.
Okay what is Dmail??? Sorry I am lost now! Pirl I don't want to miss anything!
Dave - YES, lots cooler. I turned down the CAC!
Dawn - on your home page you'll see an area where you receive Dmail. Just click on it, the same as you do for a thread, and my message will pop up.
bigcityal - NOT yet! Another day of dripping. If I sound ornery it's because I am. :-)
I think I got the hang of it pirl thanks....
i am building a patio surrounded by a stone wall this summer. i had hoped to be done by now but with all of the rain, caterpillars, and now the heat... my wall is only 1 ft tall and i haven't even started the patio. (the wall will be 3 ft on the outside and 18 in. on the inside because i have to add fill under the patio to bring it up to the right elevation) i will work on it tonight, when it gets cool.

Nice work. How did you learn to do it?
I agee with pirl - it is really looking nice. I love that look too. Good job!
That will be wonderful when it's all done up. Nice job.

Doesn't Ivy have some kind of authentic stone wall, too?
Pirl, What woulld be an inauthentic (unauthentic?) wall?
Those phony things, that I call warts, that they apply to houses! The house across the street has those warts and I let a juniper grow in one garden just to help block the view of them.
thanks for the compliments. i'm making it up as i go along. i looked up the basics in one of my books. hope it holds up well to winter heave. it's two feet deep plus a foot of gravel so it should. supposedly the freezing and thawing makes a dry stone wall stronger.
they just put a modular (modern, lots of glass) across the street from me. i am going to put in a hedge of lilacs to hide it. most of the houses on our street are at least 100 yrs old. so this new house is kind of jarring.
That ranks right up there in my pet peeve list and it's much worse than hot weather because you're stuck with it all year long but they have the beauty of the other houses to look at.
I think your stone wall looks great, EL. You seem to be doing it the right way.
I have authentic and inauthentic in my yard. The authentic stone wall surrounding my yard is a pain as Norway Maples and Sassafras constantly seed into the spaces between rocks that have long since fallen down. Authentic retaining walls under house are much better. Inauthentic wall built to match old ones is holding up well after 5 years. We'll see after 50!
I escaped building the inauthentic wall by becoming pregnant.....
You didn't name her Mason, did you?
pirl,

NatureWalker: thanks, but I'm not trying for Warts but just showing Dave what I consider to be unauthentic stone - a/k/a manufactured.
Can you imagine building a stone house with REAL stone nowadays?
P.S. I have always wanted a stone cottage - have been trying to convince hubby to redo the entire house in stone. He just laughs....
Could you/would you suggest that you'd "settle" for a big stone potting and tool shed?
Pirl, You are too funny! I'll send you my card from Garden State Brickface.
Ivy, I don't think Pirl would define your other wall as inauthentic. Its just new. New is good if done well.
EL, I love your work but I have never heard that freezing & thawing would strengthen anything with masonry (except maybe Ivy's daughter). I thought it weakened them.
Dave is right. It's a new use for real stone.
Hey it's 62 degrees! Ideal weather for all the jobs to be done.
My wonderful DH dug the holes, yesterday, for a new fenced off area we'll have with an outdoor sink so we won't be bringing in those earwigs on our veggies. If the crows don't eat all the tomatoes we should have ripe ones very soon.
Wonderful, Pirl. He's handsome AND a good worker.....
I would love to have a sink outside. Some days I am so covered in dirt that I am horrified to have to walk into the house.
Thanks.
Me, too! I'm far worse than the dog!
My 7 year old, very active son gets filthy. I get worse.
I know its bad when I need a scrub brush to clean my knees.
Clorox. Straight clorox for my hands, knees and whatever they call the part of the foot where it meets the leg, in the front. EVEN with Clorox it looks filthy all the time.
Good news! The cool front is here - hurray!
I was just thinking of you and wondering if you were cool enough yet. Its close to 60 here tonight.
