any camellia experts out there? help, please

I'm just a bit concerned about my camellia tree/bush that I inherited with the house I moved into. It was doing well and this spring bloomed beautifully, but around may/june it made a lot of buds, but they dropped off without blooming. I asked someone about it and they said it needed to be fed right away, which I did, but didn't solve the problem. I decided perhaps it was just done blooming. Now I just noticed it is getting a few more yellow leaves than one might like and the leaves up on top of the tree have big brown spots.

It may be just that the recent hot spell was a bit much and burned the tops. The blazing heat/sun had a not great effect on at least one of my citrus trees also which I could move into shade as it is container but the camellia is in the ground.

I have added a couple of photos, which are marginal quality as taken with my phone. I am wondering if I need to do something or if it will be okay.

Thanks,

Lee

This photo is of the tree and you can see the smattering of yellow leaves.

Hey Lee, I am not an expert but I can give you some reading material until someone with camellia experience stops in,

maybe you can glean something from their site. Good luck! :~)

Thanks Donna! I'll do some reading up! :-)

The brown is definitely sun damage. Not unusual in this heat. I'm surprised your citrus would need shade, they are sun lovers (although "shade" in California can be bright enough for many sun-loving plants).

You might also want to consider acid fertilizer. Camellias prefer it, although they tolerate alkaline soils better than azaleas and rhodies. Good luck!

Thanks! After reading the link that Donna sent, I agree with you.....I think we went from a bit too much moisture with all that rain and then some blazing sun.......

Yes, me and my knucklehead ideas with the citrus....they get a reasonable amount of sun and even the 'shade' it is not dark on my patio, but thought perhaps they might like almost full day of sun so moved them to the center of the patio...just in time for the heat wave. Poor things were probably just fine where they were! Meyer lemon dropped a lot of leaves, but is hanging on to some fruit still. Valencia orange seems to be recovering but no fruit starts left.

I will get the hang of all this some day!

Thanks again!
