What the heck is this?
That is a Scarabeid Beetle, or Fig Beetle. I know they are terror on figs (wiped out many of my figs at my old place) but not sure what damage they are in the grub form- I have several in my yard every year and the grubs keep popping up this time of the year. But so far nothing looks the worse for wear. Check them out in the Bug Files.
Eric,
My compost pile has the grubs all the time.
I go to turn it, and the mature beetles come flying, or trying to fly out.
The don't fly very well.....
I find www.whatsthatbug.com pretty helpful.
We called them June Bugs when I was a kid... would tie a string around them and watch them fly in circles... if we got caught doing that now we'd land in jail for cruelty to animals...
I was going to say June bug too and also the tieing it to a string. I never did it but my friends have. Minniepinranch, look WE ARE NEIGHBORS, I am so excited, you and I are the first from our area according to the member list. Lets start a support group. lol If you live in the Antelope Valley, you know what I mean! MY name is HELL IN ZONE 11.
Hi Guys,
I found the info needed on these bugs, they are fig beetles, they are the larva of the june bug which is a small brown bug that you see flying around you porch lights in the early summer, and the japanese beetle. They love ripe fruit as in my peaches, they destroyed the crop. It is advised that you clean all debris from around your fruit trees, for that is where they like to hatch. Have you ever dug in the ground an seen the white worms that are under ground, well thats them, then they grow up. Boy That Sucks!!!!. Wish they had told me that before it got so o bad, but thats what these forums are for , so we can help each other.
A big thanks to all who responded, I am forever grateful.

So good to know that I am not the only one out here. I love it here. I am still putting things together but it should be spectacular. Just have to adjust to different things, the weather.

Eric
Eric where did you move here from? I found a list of others from our area on the link @ the top of the page that says EXTRAS and found more of us. I sent all the people a personal D-mail but I am not sure if they are all paid members so I don`t know if they can answer me and maybe they don`t often get on the DG site???? we`l see. Dawn
ps. Do you breed only mini pins? Do you breed Dobys too? my friend has one of the mini pin chihuahuas and loves it.
I moved from LA area, the min pins here essentialy own the ranch and I work for them, lol, but I do not breed.
Eric
Eric, that is good, there are too many breeders anyway. So I take it that they are your kids. Hey I will send you a d-mail, please check it ok? Dawn
