What's Growing Part 7

We've had lots of fun in this thread...here's where it continued from http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/629797/#top

that's one pretty tangle :-) that lobelia is THE choice if you want a true red...that would be a great accent anywhere. very nice

Beachwood, OH

Thanks grampapa! I love those Black Beauty's the best - they've even taken over 1st place from Casa Blanca which has been the bee's knees for me for a long time.

I planted Lilium speciosum alba and rubrum - or is it rubra? near these. They are going to be small this year I can tell and will want to be transplanted as I don't think they got enough sun earlier to grow more upright. Either that or I set the bulbs in crooked. But the nice thing is that they extend the lily season as they are not nearly ready to bloom - looks like mid-August maybe. They have hellebores and astilbes at their feet.

Wellington, OH

Those really are beautiful - and I like the tangle! Since I've been trying different plants together, I'm finding that some plants really look good in an informal setting and others (hostas, for instance) just kind of insist on being a little more formal. I love both looks.

Kay

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I agree about the informal setting. Great pics everyone. Isn't fun?? Here are a few of mine.

Anita, fabulous, as usual. the colors in this one woke me right up this morning! those dahlias make for some spectacular closeups.

Anita - the colors in your collage are fanastic. I've put dahlias as #1 on my list next year. Kay

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Al is the King of Dahlia's - Don't tell him though...it might go straight to his head. I like Dahlia's too. I've even had success in storing them through the winter and then having them again the next season. This year I grew some from seed. They all haven't flowered yet, so I'm not sure about the blooms. I can't wait to see them.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Nice collage Anita.

I could easily post a new dahlia in here, but this is the last of my daylilies I think

That's one big bug!!! That's from your backyard or some SciFi flick?

Windham, NY(Zone 4b)

gram- just caught up with this thread, i've been busy. what zone does heather and heath grow in. (it's my name 'erica' and i've always wanted to try growing it) have you ever seen a cut flower in a florist called 'boronia'? its hot fuschia and smells fabulous. it looks a lot like your heath and i was wondering if it's related.

andy-thanks for the tip about phlox, i was planning on getting rid of mine cause it just lays on the ground and gets all spirally no matter how much i try to stake it.

i need a suggestion for a large headed/mass of color flower in the pink/purple family, about 12-18 in tall that will bloom now. my border in front of my house has nothing great right now. at that height. everything that is in bloom is too airy to make a statement. so i have a huge blank space between my petunias and my monarda.

Eastern MA, MA

ericalynn, asters are in that range of height, purple, native to new england and very pretty. Mine have been in bloom for about a week and have many more buds.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

are you looking for perennial or annual??

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

erica, the heaths and heathers that I have are supposed to be hardy to z4-5 so you can give it a try. there are many varieties that are not. the ericas are the winter heaths that bloom from nov-dec thru to feb-mar. the only problem is, if it's under the snow it kind of takes the fun out of it, but some hold their flowers into spring. some of the foliage is pretty spectacular, too,

the Scotch heathers, calluna vulgaris are just blooming now jul-aug into fall. so I'm having fun with those. I got mine from Rock Spray Nursery in Mass. they used to have a collection that was specifically hardy to z4. I don't see it on their site now, but they would put some together for you.

http://rockspray.com/

I don't know boronia
should also mention that I am very new to to heath/heather growing; put them in spring '05

I don't have anything pink or purple that short right now. Prof Kip aster will be a bit later, and there are some earlier in the summer.

Here is Chelsea Helenium, this one is close to 4'. I do have some shorter ones coming up yet.

Erica, I have dwarf New York asters, Wood's Pink and Wood's Purple, but they aren't blooming yet either. probably a couple of weeks. the pink is about 12" the purple about 16". of course I planted the pink behind the purple :^O

actually, some of the callunas might work for you. most are purple or pink and many are blooming by now. the flowers are tiny but cover the plant. and there are various sizes and habits. again, one of the specialty nurseries could help if you're interested

Al, I really like that helenium...might forgive it for being 4' :-) if you get a chance, could I beg for a pic of the whole plant? (pretty please with helenium on top?)

Mystic, CT(Zone 6b)

Ok, I go away for a day and you guys try to ditch me by starting a new thread! Well, I followed you, ha ha ha...

Anitabryk- stop it! those luscious montages- you are making me look bad.... your vivid colors knock me out!

Dave- your tetra black beauty pic is beautiful- with a tantalizing glimpse into the rest of your garden!

Crockny- on the previous thread, can you tell me what is growing in the pic from your post at 11:00 am Aug. 1st? The first picture? The colors are spectacular- the daylily especially!

BigCity- thanks so much for Catherine Woodbury. Your oakleaf Hydrangea is tres magnifique, and I think you had better watch out for that sumac, it might just take over the world!

Hi Everyone!
Hope this message will post as I've had comp. problems and need a new "Mother Board" .
I own a Dell and always buy the extended warrantee, so glad i did! The "Dell Man" will be here in a few days and it should be as good as new. it won't reconize my camera, my printer, (but will let me fax) or my sub-wuffer (sp), right now and is touchy about the mouse.
My orientals are in full bloom right now and all I can do is take pictures and hope ive captured them in the right light.
Al ~ That Chelsea Helenium is really lovely and so was that daylily "Becky Lynn"!

Anita ~ Those dahlia pictures are gorgeous and I love the butterfly on the cone flower.
Ive only been away a few days but missed out on lots of post I see! So I'm just going to say, Nice pictures everyone! I really enjoyed them and was sorry I couldn't tell you so when they were being posted.
Celeste

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Hey, Pix. welcome back! I was hopin' you were on vacation or something good. Be looking forward to a whole string of luscious orientals. Tell the Dell-man (hope that's nothing like the 'cable guy') it's an emergency!

Ivy...we left a trail of breadcrumbs

Were you gone together ;)

Well I guess it's helenium time again - Gram

this is the full shot of Chelsey, I have it grwoing in back of dahlia since the foliage is just foliage. They do better with wet sites than a lot of plants

Here is a new variety Double Trouble, double flower - I guess. Not exactly wowing me yet. It is kinda small, maybe the fact that it is in a pot for this year is limiting it.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

This was Mardi Gras, probably the size and color you want.

2 more Helenium will be ready next week.

Thanks a bunch, Al. Just trying to decide the best place. One more question. Is fall planting a good idea?

I have some mutant black-eyed susans ;^) this is probably how the double echinaceas like razzmatazz started. some of them just have one petal sticking out the top like yankee doodle...stuck a feather in their cap

They're both wonderful - glad I don't have to pick a favorite. Kay

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Very pretty, gram! They're BOTH my favorite! Love the lily , middle left, especially.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

NIce Gram.

I was talking to this lady last week and she looked down at her hostas flowers and said 'I thought I had hostas growing here - I don't know what these are'

I don't mind fall perennial plantings, September is a decent time to give them time to settle in before winter.

here is a big dahlia - Bonaventure

That is a beauty, Al. Looks good enough to eat. Reminds me of butter.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Gram, Very nice gardening & photography!

Windham, NY(Zone 4b)

alot of nurserys have clearance on their perrenials in the fall. we go apple picking every year at the end of september. the orchard also has a nursery. i buy whatever they have left. last year i got about 25-1gallon pots (monarda, yellow daylilies, hosta, sage, and more) for $15. 2/3 didn't make it(we get snow in october), but it was still a deal.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Wow! Lots of places have sales but 25 1-gallon plants for $15!! Now how far is Windham from CT?....

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Gram ~ those collages are wonderful, I love how they are extreme opposites!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

thanks, everyone. didn't realize until I started putting the collage together. I kinda wish the beds were put together that way :-) I snuck in an indoor orchid in the cool one because it's been blooming it's head off for years and I just love it.

nap, that daylily is 'Strawberry Candy' it just keeps getting more and more orange. now it has developed a kind of salmon margin. I still love it, but waiting for next year to see if it is more pink. everything has more intense color in this heat, it seems, which suprises me. the little pink rose is at least a couple shades deeper.

Al, that dahlia has to be pretty impressive in person...beautiful!

I'm going shopping with Erica this fall!
