My Nandina are Driving Me Nuts!!!

Madison, MS

What in the world do I do? - we put these in about 10 years ago in the front beds - they are the dwarf nandinas with the red berries and have beautiful foliage year round. The problem is they come up everywhere in my beds. I don't even want to work in the front beds because of these things. I'm constantly chopping/digging/pulling up suckers. I can chop these things to the ground and they come back in full force! It's funny because everyone else I know in my area that has them doesn't seem to have this problem or actually has problems with them filling out. Any Ideas???

They are notorious as aggressive plants if they like their habitat. Your only reasonable choice probably is to move one or two of them to a place where they can be controlled more easily and herbicide the rest. Either that, or move up here where they can't survive the winter!

Well they definatley like their habitat here at my house - the only problem with pulling them up is replacing them - lots of $$$ - they are my main shrub. I just wish there was some way to control them more.

You could trench around their bed and install a root barrier. Some people use heavy plastic sheeting, metal flashing, or root-control fabric (perhaps impregnated with herbicide or copper coated). Bury it deeper than the root penetration (that varies witrh soil) and let it stick out of the ground an inch or so to keep the roots from jumping it. Then spray out all the suckers beyond the barrier with a systemic herbicide that will translocate via the roots to all nandina plants that are on the wrong side. It probably will take two or three tries to get it all.

Now that's a good idea - my hubby will kill me - but much better than the alternative! Thanks so much!

Do a Google search on bamboo barriers for sources.

I have seedlings coming up in my yard from my neighbors plants. Spraying them with herbicide usually takes two or three times because they keep coming back, and they are hard to pull because of their massive root system. I don't see anything "Heavenly" about Heavenly bamboo.
