What bulbs will you order for fall planting?!

Centennial, CO(Zone 5b)

White_Hydrangea -- Every Walmart from Parker to Littleton has the Batik this year. I already have one bag. I was there again today to scoop up a bunch of lonely roses, and they still have plenty of Batik. I'm mixing it with "Black Magic" this year.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

I ordered mostly more of what I really enjoyed last planting. Keep in mind that until last fall, I lived in a house with a lot the size of a shredded wheat, and most of it was either in concrete (BIG driveway), shade, or competing for space with some very aggressive tree roots. I think I had maybe 2 tulips & 2 clumps of bluebells. Now I have a half-acre yard with sun, shade & everything in between. plus a wall of windows to admire it all. Soooo....
I ordered 5 more Fritillaria persica
http://www.colorblends.com/bulb/Persian+Fritillary,12,0

And I’m sharing an order of 100 Snake’s head frits with a friend--
http://www.colorblends.com/bulb/Snake%27s+Head,12,2

Ditto on sharing 100 of allium unifolium:
http://www.colorblends.com/bulb/Allium+Unifolium,6,9

For tulips, I decided to try some Gudoshnik this year:
http://www.colorblends.com/bulb/Gudoshnik,1,39

And I ordered a sinful number of Sultans of Spring tulip mix:
http://www.colorblends.com/bulb/Sultans+of+Spring,1,82
I was thrilled with these last year, & they really are great cutting flowers,
& we ended up bird-dogging around the yard daily to see what the new blooms & colors were there. Long-lasting, too.
I ordered lots more daffs this year, too.
Marieke is new to me but sounds good:
http://www.daffodildepot.com/daffodil/Marieke,92,2
I got more Thalia this year, as they were beautiful & long-lasting.
I must not have been the only one because the link is gone at colorblends!
However, I also ordered them in a blend called Flight Time,
which is a combo of Thalia and Puppet.
http://www.colorblends.com/DaffodilDepot/daffodil/Flight+Time,2,23
Then I got some Stratosphere, which is a tall, impossibly yellow jonquil.
http://www.colorblends.com/DaffodilDepot/daffodil/Stratosphere,2,68
I also ordered more Spring Snowflake--- I liked these better than the snowdrops. They’re larger, more substantial, & long-lasting.
http://www.colorblends.com/bulb/Spring+Snowflake,3,39

From Van Engelen’s I ordered Fritillaria Pontica
http://www.vanengelen.com/catview.cgi?_fn=Item&_recordnum=3484&_category=Fritillaria
and Allium Cernuum
http://www.vanengelen.com/catview.cgi?_fn=Item&_recordnum=1149&_category=Allium
and Allium Bulgaricum
http://www.vanengelen.com/catview.cgi?_fn=Item&_recordnum=1145&_category=Allium
I also got a couple types of narcissus—one called Angel Eyes
http://www.vanengelen.com/catview.cgi?_fn=Item&_recordnum=8023&_category=Narcissi:Poeticus
and one called Golden Echo which looks like a daff that mated with a fried egg:

Ohmigosh--- I need some miniatures! And some muscari! And then Iris!

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Looks like Frits and allium will be quite the 'it' blooms next spring! Everyone is getting very adventuresome in their choices!

I stopped at the local garden center's 25% off coupon sale yesterday and picked up some mainstays--some narcissus for naturalizing in our back yard and a few more purple crocus for my 'little blue bulbs' concept-- a mixed planting in my part-sun area of four or five kinds of scilla, muscari, chiondoxa, crocuses, and some 'iph' something bulbs... They recommended mixing 3 or 4 kinds of blue bulbs to extend the bloom season. Saw this 4-way blue combination recommended in a magazine so we shall see how it works (if I can keep the deer/rabbits away.)

Also stopped at Home Depot and Lowes to check out bulb displays and they have quite a few nice looking bulbs, too, at good prices. I hope all the contractors/handymen (and women) who pass those racks pick up a bag or two to plant--I wish every yard had a few bright bulb blooms come April!

goshsmom--I hope I get invited over to your spring garden tour! Looks like it will be lovely!

white_hydrangea, It's really crummy that your bulb ordering plan has been messed up but don't forget that B & B, VanEngelen and the others often have great sales on bulbs around Thanksgiving. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise. Late fall 50% off sale time is when I pick up some of the pricey ones that I have been lusting after!

From reading everyone's lists I think we will have some marvelous photo threads come next spring!

I'm about the 4th or 5th post at the top of this thread telling plans for the fall planting. I added some Muscari, both botryoides Album and cosmosum Plumosum, and ended up spending $210. Oh, dear! And I don't even have iris yet!

Am getting 140 Anemone blanda Blue Star from the VanEngelin co-op. At least they were cheap!

Winchester, VA(Zone 6a)

tabasco,
I wish i could plant 5000 .... I have one of those bulb hole diggers ... blah. I don't plant in masses amounts, sigh, I work for a nonprofit and my profits are NON as well. So, I do what i can when the profits are there.

I did get some new hyacinths (spelling?) and daffs and such from Old House Gardens. That should hold me over, with the 5 bags of bulbs from costco. :)

love this web site.

Winchester, VA(Zone 6a)

Hi, what are muscari?? tee hee thankx.

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Muscari are also known as Grape Hyacinth. You can find it here....
http://davesgarden.com/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=Muscari&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search

I don't have any myself..... yet! But just wait until next spring!

Winchester, VA(Zone 6a)

Thanks!!! Hate to be so ignorant. Now I am not. :) I have grape hyacinth. Lovely.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Pegdog--- I feel your "non-profit" pain! I have one sister who's a social worker, one who teaches kindergarten, & I went through 2 non-profit careers before I became disabled. A few years ago we all went to an out of town wedding. When we got to the reception, we sat down at our assigned table & tried to get to know everybody else. We soon reached an inescapable conclusion--- we were all doing good deeds for no money. We were seated at the Non-Profit table! (And we still tease the bride for her seating plan. She teaches 2nd grade!)
Goshsmom

Winchester, VA(Zone 6a)

How odd to have a np table at a wedding. I hope it was a coincidence. My job is for a children's museum. great job.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Pegdog, It wasn't officially an NP table. I think when they were putting together the tables, they were trying to put non-family with people who might have similar interests--- we were the wags who decided to identify ourselves as the Non-Profits. I practically worship children's museums. The one in Indianapolis is FANTASTIC. My son is in his 20's now, but I think he would love to be able to spend a week at a children's museum. Hmmm, I think maybe I would, too! Here's to the child in all of us!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9a)

Watsonia, bearded iris and babiana

Winchester, VA(Zone 6a)

I take my breaks and "play" every day in the Museum here. Love it. We are expanding, too. New one being built in 07-08. ;)

Aurora, CO(Zone 5a)

I tell myself that there's always next year. And then I'll have more beds prepared. I'm trying to figure out if I can afford another order to Schreiners. Perhaps black irises and white irises to plant around that stupid stump to hide it. Then if I put a couple containers on top of the stump, maybe no one will notice it's there.

Not like I have people trooping in and out of my back yard. I better not!

Aurora, CO(Zone 5a)

Okay, that's it. No more bulbs. I have made my last order. I still have to figure out where to put the ones I've already ordered. Nope, any more and it's top ramen for me all winter.

somewhere, PA

LOL. White_Hydrangea - I lived on ramen noodle the first year in my first house. I'd go buy a new tree or shrub and have no money left for groceries.
