I have 4 100 yr old oak trees. I am told they should not have any more water than what they have been accustomed during there life time. Do you think it will kill them to water them? I know it would take a lot of water to reach their roots but I am getting worried about them.
Watering trees during the drought
Does your community have a Tree Stewards program? I'm sure they'd be happy to help you keep such historic trees alive and would know the best practices for your area.
If you are in that severe drought zone I saw on the map today, and you have access to ample water, a deep soaking could be very helpful. Daily or weekly sprinkling, however, is not. Depending upon your soil depth and texture, apply several thousand gallons under the entire crown spread of each tree (without soaking the trunk bark), equivalent to about a two-inch rain, then let things dry down again for a few weeks.
