Baker's Acres Begonias!

Yee haw!!! Work for begonias!

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Hey Chris, was wondering when you'd show up! Unfortunately the day we visited was the same morning you and Nancy had departed for PPA in Montreal . Understand we were on the "tails" of Dan Heims as well? Guess it was just poor planning on our part :( We left word with Bart to let you know that we had missed you. He graciously offered to let us check out the goodies in the stock house but we weren't able to stay that long as it was getting hot and we had pets traveling with us. Next time we'll come without the pets! I was like a kid in a candy store just with the Begonias alone and Rick took one look at your Trees and Shrubs and said "You don't want to go there" :)) We definitely have to make a trip back and plan to spend some time - Rick's alma mater is Dennison and I'd really like to explore the area a little more.

And you're very welcome re: the "advertising". We were really impressed with your place and anyone who lives within an easy drive owes it to themselves to make the trip. Your plants are fantastic! Kills me to think what I paid for my Begonias at Logee's and what I got in return - no comparison!

smkennedy, we bring them ALL inside for the winter. Last fall I had to buy three new shelving units just to hold the Begonias and now I've got even more!! Even though we have greenhouses we don't heat them over the winter so it's in the house they go. Believe me, we don't have any "good conditions" for them and they take alot of abuse over the winter but even as pathetic as they look when I bring them back outside in the spring, by mid summer they're all perking up and look gorgeous. Of course, there are some that just won't perform but that's when I get to replace them!

Now, if I can just figure out a way to add a small greenhouse to the house, me AND my Begonias would be happy :) We have a loft that never gets used unless we have guests and thinking maybe we could convert it to make room for more Begonias - but then I wouldn't be able to "see" them. Of course if this "bad habit" keeps up, we'll just have to remove the couch or a few chairs from the living room??

Deb,
Sorry we missed you. You'll have to visit earlier in the year when we really have a good selection of stuff. We're only 5 miles from Denison.

Happy to find this thread.I got a few plants from Logee's last year (canes) and they I doing great.I want more but I don't want to pay their prices.

I bought 2 Rexes in Loewes but as usual ( I've tried many times before) they aren't doing great but they are still alive.

I also started some tubers in upside down pots and they aren't flowering as much as usual.I hope they pick up when it cools off.

I am so sorry that I wasn't able to visit any nurseries or buy any plants when I was in Berkeley in June.

I'll take some pics and send ASAP

Debra, You sure got some nice begonias. At great prices too. I will have to get there next year. We were supposed to go to Ohio this year and I was going to stop there. Our trip was cancelled when my husband had back surgery, bummer. I like your idea Calif_Sue - Work for begonias.

Nancy, I am intrigued with your upside down pot and how it works. Is this pot made to be used unside down, or is this something you thought of and made work?

tusseemussee (I love your name)

I wish that I had thought these up but no.They are made in Austrailia hence "down under".

You plant the bulb or plant in the upright position and after a few weeks the roots take hold and you turn it over.

I have been planting Begonia tubers in them for a few years and they look great with lots of blooms.Hope they pick up this year.

If you get a chance to go to Miami, drop in at PHOE. I got 3 'My Special Angel' rooted cuttings there last year for $3 a piece and they grew like crazy. I don't know how many cuttings I took and gave away. It is a standout cane.

Here is a bird's eye view of it and 'Jim Wyrtzen' on the sidewal.
