Baker's Acres Begonias!

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Haven't spent much time here since the busy spring season, but wanted to share my haul from Baker's Acres :) So many of our Begonias did not fare well through the winter so we decided to make Baker's a stop on our way back from Michigan. Wow! An incredible selection, I think we picked up one of each and a steal at $2.49 each!

I've got individual pictures of each, but have to jot down the name of each adding them to this thread. Also picked up this beautiful Cissus discolor (Rex Begonia Vine). I had a small piece of one that I had picked up in Florida last fall but it's been suffering. Couldn't believe it, these were on sale for 50% off and I couldn't resist. Only had 3 or 4 left and grabbed this one for $15.00!! I placed it right near my back door so I can see it while I'm in the working in the kitchen - Thank you Baker's Acres :)

Hi Debra! I was just thinking about you, wondering where you had been!
Wow what a haul! Sure wish Bake would do mail order!!! Those are beauties! Cant wait to see who everybody is.

Love your Cissus too!

hey lali, i've been following along whenever i get a chance, but not much time to post lately. If you're ever in the Columbus area, you've got to find your way to Baker's. Wonderful place, really well organized, superb plants, excellent prices and friendly and helpful salespeople. Oh, and did I mention fantastic Begonias? :) Now if we could just talk Chris into mail order??? Maybe just for us DG Begonia nuts??

Heat has driven me inside for awhile and taking a break so thought I'd post at least a few of my new babies

What was I thinking??? NOW we have it :)

paleata. This is one I know will get huge. We still have one from Palm Hammock that struggled through my "abuse" this winter and it's finally starting to shape up, so now I have two :)

Strawberry Creme - maybe the name implies that this one will take on more of a pink hue?

Cherries and Chocolate - never have had much luck with this one, maybe third time around I'll have better luck

oops, got that mixed up with this one - Pandora. I've had several like this before that were called Cherries and ???

Verdict's still out on this one - Tondelayo. Rick thinks it's really going to be pretty - maybe he's right, after all I didn't think I liked Marmaduke either!

WOWEEEEE! very nice haul!!
I have a question on your 'Silver Queen' I grow one that's pretty darn near identical to yours, but don't have a name for it. I searched the astro site and came up with this http://absastro.tripod.com/hkey/hpicrhizom_ak/BillClaybaugh.jpg

So I've been thinking I had Bill Claybaugh but now I'm wondering if I have Silver Queen. Hmmm. (scratching head) I wonder if the astro site has the wrong photo or if they just look that similar. According to the database, Bill has sizemoreae and Masoniana as parents. (no photo) but the description I find in Thompson's book for Silver Queen says pink leaves. (scratching head again...)
It's a mystery. I've sent the photo to another begonia head for id help.

Either way, it's a beauty for sure. Mine is roughly 24" across now, happy as a clam.

Did you repot into clay or did you buy them that way? They all look so healthy and lush!!

WOW!! Hope mine turns out like that - I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. These were all in 2-1/2" pots and Rick just got them bumped up this week. They're looking so pretty all grouped together, I don't want to move them, but they're sitting on the table on the deck - where are we gonna eat?

I remember wanting this one at Palm Hammock, but they were too big! B. acetosa

Glad to entertain you this afternoon - Sending these on dial-up is killing me, but it's worth it if you get your "fix" :)

Last one for now - This was the whole purpose for our stop there - B. carolineifolia. Been wanting this one forever and there was only ONE left! Think it was waiting just for me?

Have three more to get a picture of - maybe this evening when it's not so darned hot and I'll post them tomorrow morning.

Does anyone watch 'People, Places and Plants' on HGTV? Watch it faithfully every Sunday morning at 7AM and this morning they were visiting Logees!!! They had the most beautiful Begonia that Byron said is new, unnamed as of the taping of the show - now I've got to visit their site and see if I can find it!

This is it! http://www.logees.com/prodinfo.asp?number=B3026-2

I can't believe what a deal you paid for those. Here they would be from $4.99 but more like $6.99. I want to go to Bakers Acres!!!

I love all of them. Great shots too. You are a lucky, lucky duck.

rcn48,
Gorgeous plants and great photos. Where are you going to keep them all during the winter? Do you have a green house? Whenever I am longing for a new plant, particularly a begonia which might often get large, I have to think about where I can keep it with good conditions for the winter. Many of them I get can't stand my winter growing conditions, and then depart to make way for new ones. My new addition this summer is Escargot, which might struggle indoors this winter.

And finally, where is Baker's Acres?

Hey Deb,

You're in big trouble! You didn't introduce yourself when you were here. We would've given you the back door tour. There are many more goodies in the stock house that are currently out of production. Guess you'll just have to come back.

Chris

PS. Thanks for the great advertising!

Susan,

We're in Alexandria, Ohio about 20 minutes northeast of Columbus.

So Chris, how about starting up some mail order? (nudge nudge) We were just discussing how it would be great to have a reliable source with a great selection!

Yes! Yes! There's the classified ads section for advertisements! I'd be a mailorder customer.

Susan

Alexandria, OH(Zone 5b)

Sorry folks but we just can't do it. Our retail sales at the greenhouse take all our time and then some. There's gotta be other good mail order out there. I recommend Firmly Planted. http://www.firmlyplanted.net/ Some of the independent garden centers and Mom and Pop places are good too. Susan in VA - McDonald's in Hampton or VA Beach usually has a nice selection. They come here once a year to get new plants. There is another place in Smithfield but I can't remember the name. A short trip for you might be to Sanford NC to Big Bloomers. Lots of stuff there.
Lali, what about Cottage Gardens in Petaluma? There's Annie's in Richmond but they don't have many begonias. Susan in MN - sorry, I'm stumped on that one. All I know is Bachman's.

Thanks,
Chris

Well, maybe we can hire someone to be our 'shopper'. ☺

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

We do get some nice begonias here in the Bay Area and I really can't complain at all, but with insatiable appetites, who can be satisfied!? LOL. It's just that your plant list is to die for! And look how healthy and beautiful!!!

Cottage in Petaluma has only ever had b. 'Concord' that I've found. But Cottage in St. Helena (different company with the same name) is now growing them. (sadly no name tags, they were putting names on them before that they made up, but I believe they have stopped this practice. They do however have some REAL beauties out on the market. Just wish I could get a positive ID on them)

Hey Sue, I'll volunteer! ☺

I tell ya what Chris, I'll fly out for a week, drag Kell and Sue with me. You can open up for online begonia sales for a 'once a year' special. Advertise the heck out of it or do a co-op, and we'll pack and ship and play in the plants. How's that? I carry this sign around my neck all the time 'Will work for Begonias' (not kidding!) Who needs to eat and pay their mortgage anyway? (It's a sickness gang! It really is!)

(hey Sue and Kell, dontchya just love how I volunteered you two to work!)

Firmly planted has a neat selection but their web site has said sold out for weeks. Don't think they'll have more until next year?

(Chris, you know I'm just kidding dont ya? ~ just hard to take 'no' for an answer when one is an addict! wink wink)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I heard Annies is doing such a great online business they are going to no longer sell to their nursery customers. Online is the way to go.

You could hire a high school kid to wrap them in the PO boxes once a week and see how it goes for you. Of course getting a web site up could be pain.

I guess it is road trip time. LOL

Pack your bags Kell!
