I go to church most Sunday mornings, so I won't be on...and especially this Sunday as DH and I just got a new cat from Paws Match at PetsMart tonight.

SUNDAY, July 30: Texas "Coffee" and Gardening in the Mornin
Here is Sat. link if you are just joining and want to catch up. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/632572/
Sunday....
Y'all were quite active with the chatting yesterday I see. I was on and off, but guess I didn't check in late. Couldn't have offered much help on shade plants since most of my shade is only in early morning; everything must withstand the heat of the day around here. I do have one spot in the back that gets morning sun only then shade the remainder of the day. I have calla lilies, coleus, perilla, lamiums, elephant ear and white ginger. Oh and the 'blackie' potato vine has wound itself throughout.
I also added the "dis-obedient" obedient plant since it will work in shady areas too. LOL! It has color for a long time and takes very little care at all.

I'm late today because DH and I hit the garden early. We were out by 7:00. I'm really tired of the few plants I have that need "nursing". I don't like to use chemicals any more than I absolutely have to, so some of this stuff is coming out! I'm reluctantly saying goodbye to one large double pink Althea and one smaller Blue Satin Althea. It seems that something is wrong with them all the time, so they're going. Also every lantana I have on the place will be pulled out and burned. I'm sure I can find something that doesn't have the pest problems that they do. I pulled out the azelias right after blooming this year because of the lacewings on them. I don't think nuclear warfare could control lacewings when they're on lantana or azelias! Good thing about all this clearing is I now have room for more plants. I think another trip to the nursery is called for! Y'all have a good Sunday.
Good morning! My name is Susannah -- and I'm waving wildly from the DFW area. See the sweaty one on the map with the trowel in one hand and the Golden Retriever tugging at the garden hose? Right there? That's me.
Thought I'd peek into the local area -- and this seemed like a fun thread.
Welcome, Susannah. Lord, child, get in out of that heat. I'll have to finish my "stuff" tomorrow morning or try a bit more late this evening. It's too hot to be out in this Texas sun this time of day. I've at least got all the mosquitos well fed!
Welcome Susannah, This is a fun group. i am relatively new and always made to feel welcome.
I was moving too slow this morning to do anything outside before the heat. my back is stiff from too much bending over yesterday at my MIL garden. it's #### getting older and really needing to remember to stretch before a heavy day weeding and mulching.. i got a Pilates machine that seems to be helping(when i use it!!) So I think I'll brave going to the store and try to find some new jeans. next weekend is that tax free thing and you wouldn't catch me at the mall then, but maybe they will have a good selection now so i can find something that isn't too tight in the waist, isn't too loose in the rear..the only thing worse is trying to find a bathing suit, but i gave up on that a few years ago..
maybe as a treat for going to the clothes store i'll swing by a nursery just to see what they have. Starting Aug 1 I get to use my "daisy dollars" which is like a coupon for 1/2 off any plant, pot etc at our local nursery.(For each dollar you spend through the year they give you a "daisy dollar" that you can use in August)
I do the same thing any time i have to go somewhere i hate(like the dentist) I tell myself that if I'm a good girl and do this I get to go to the nursery . What are your 'treats" for yourself?

The nursery has become a huge treat (read: addiction) for me, as well. We have an organic nursery about four blocks away, and I'm there rather more often than my checkbook allows.
I'm a canine handler on a search-and-rescue team (we rescue/recover missing persons and victims of accidents/disasters, etc.), and we've had enough work this summer recovering lake accidents that I find the only real pick-me-up is to go home and plant something new in the garden!
So yeah, addiction is the right word.
I posted about this elsewhere at DG, but this summer we built a little play cottage for the dogs -- and the neighborhood kids -- in the backyard. The big project has been landscaping around that.
Here's the cottage, called "La Folie des Chiots" (the madness of the pups) -- photo below.
And here's the search dog (her name is "Puzzle") in civilian clothes welcoming you to the cottage front door! http://www.catoninetales.com/images/lemonade.jpg
The dogs love it when we throw open all the doors and have other dogs over for playdates. They race around the garden and into and out of the little house, sometimes pausing for a drink from a bowl of water inside.
This summer's struggle is our sad, failed St. Augustine, laid as sod in October and thriving all last autumn, but this year we lost at least 1/3 -- maybe 1/2 of it. So now we're considering alternative ground covers in parts of the yard and other kinds of landscaping. The good news: none of our dogs is particularly garden-destructive. And we find they like to have things to run around. They play more now that the landscaping has begun than they did when the yard was just open grass. They like having obstacles to weave through and around as they chase. When Puzzle just feels like running, she makes what we call "Crazy 8s" around the cottage, the Japanese maple, the reclining chairs, the container garden, etc. Sometimes the family Pomeranians chase her, and then we call it the "Folie 500". They have a terrific good time weaving around all the obstacles. Makes sense, I guess. I know Goldens *and* Pomeranians enjoy competing in agility, so maybe they're having a little competition of their own in the backyard.
Temp's climbing already! Iced coffee, anyone, with maybe just a hint of Bailey's and mint?

love the pic above....very nicely done!!!
Welcome, Susannah,
That is a neat cottage and very cute colors too. Your Puzzle looks so full of energy. I can just see the Follie 500 in motion too.
Hopefully you can come to the Swap in Arlington in Oct. since you live in the immediate area. You can meet so many DG'ers that are regulars on the threads. Well it is out back again since the sun has gone down.
Later.
Sheila
hey sheila...are you going back out cause you really have to ?? or going out cause you love too?? just curious...
Love it!! I deserved it since I ironed clothes, cooked supper and cleaned up the kitchen this afternoon. lol! I had taken several breaks this afternoon between ironing, etc. DH was napping and I went out on the deck, pulled out the ugly ones and then pulled out the ones I wanted to repot, etc. I sat them in the middle of the steps. Then I rearranged what was left. So when I went back out I moved them to the shop (potting area) and divided, etc.
Too tired to stay up any longer...chat in the morning.
