Is this a hummingbird moth?
CLOSED: What kind of "flutterer" is this?
Yes..they are quite interesting
it looks like a Hummingbird Clearwing
Since this post has been bumped back up, just thought I would mention that I had these again in March-April when it was really warm, but then in mid-April the temperature got really cold (low 20's, upper teens) and I haven't seen any of them since that freeze. Hope it didn't kill all of them in this area. :=(
I'm worried about that freeze, too. I don't see nearly the insect activity, hummers, butterflies, etc that I should be seeing.
What is the cool flower in your photo above? Purple with a white picotee edge...its very pretty.
Suzy
Here is my question - is the plant the moth is on a perennial? I have a few and would like to see them come up again next year, here in zone 7...
This is the plant

It was sold to me as a perennial, but it did not survive the winter in zone 6b.
I think this moth a Snowberry Clearwing, Hemaris diffinis

Claypa ..
I agree - the Snowberry.
And, chicochi3 .. that is a very handsome batch of blooms.
The clearwings are beginning to reappear, but have had only 'glancing glimpses' of one or two, on different occasions of most recent. I'd had somewhat of the same concerns myself.
There's also been a significant # of the wee-sized (miniature hummingbird-moth-resembling) guys also. (lol) Jes haven't looked them up yet tho' ..
