I bought a dwarf butterfly bush last year at lowe's. It bloomed last year but alas not one bloom or even panacle this year. I didn't cut it back and it had new growth from the old branches rather than from the ground. It grew to about 2 1/2 to 3 ft. this year. I fertilized it in spring with plant tone. Other butterfly bushes in northeastern Ohio are blooming now. Please help I don't know what I did wrong.
butterfly bush not flowering
Is it looking healthy otherwise? Is it planted in the sun? If it's struggling against some pest or poor cultural conditions (too much/little water) that could cause it to not bloom, or if it's in too shady of a location it may not bloom well. How long have the others been blooming? Out here they've been blooming for months, but in your area if other people's have only been blooming for a short time then I wouldn't necessarily worry yet, I've found with many of my plants that I'll see them blooming in someone else's yard weeks before mine start. Buddleia's bloom from new growth so whether you pruned it last year or not shouldn't matter. Another possibility is that it got too much nitrogen (I'm not familiar with plant tone so I don't know if this could be the case or not). Too much nitrogen will cause lots of leaf/stem growth but no blooming. Personally I don't fertilize my buddleia's much--they seem to generally do fine on their own.
Plant Tone should be fine. I think it's 5-3-3. Do you have it in full sun?
Anyway, some of the newer cultivars, such as Adonis Blue, Peacock, and Purple Emperor that are the shorter varieties do seem to bloom later for me.
Maybe give it a couple waterings with that new Miracle Grow Bloom Booster.
And did you know that if you cut the dying flowers off the butterfly bushes they will bloom right thru till killing frost?
I bet it will be along soon. If not blooming in the next couple of weeks, can you post a picture of how you have it sited?
thanks for the reply I guess I left a lot of info out. Its sited on the west side of the house so it gets full afternoon sun from about 11 am till7 pm. Its looking healthly otherwise with plenty of leaves but not a ridiculous amount. My neighbor has a butterfly bush she planted last year it it just started to bloom about a week ago. Mine however doesnt have any panaches on it only some tiny round clustered circles (maybe 2-3 ) in the places between the tip leaves.
It sounds like it's getting ready to bloom, so I wouldn't worry at all. Even if you had the exact same cultivar as your neighbor, being a week or so behind on the bloom wouldn't be a big deal, and my guess is you have a different cultivar than she does which means there's even less need to be concerned if the bloom is a few weeks behind. And my guess is that your soon-to-be flower clusters look different than your neighbor's because you have a different cultivar--I think the dwarf ones tend to have smaller flower clusters than the regular ones do.
