Anyone who may have been interestd in this plant that was recently on ebay, here is a source for them. They offer one gallon size $12 ((all sold out)) and 2" x 2" square tubes ((1 year old plants)) $8 I bought a few of the tube plants which will be shipped out ot me on monday.

I have bought from the ebay seller who had the one listed a few days ago. She had more and was going to offer me one for sale but has had such high demand for them since listing the first one that she wants to give everyone an equal opportunity at winning it.

David,
Thanks for posting this information. What a beautifull vine. Hmmmm what can I do with this in the winter?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Oh, thank you David. How terribly considerate of you to think of us!!! Golly Gee!!! I bid on that vine...but the bidding got to rich for my little budget...but so glad you got some.... WOW.

Thanks for sharing.

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

David thanks for the link, I was able to purchase one. Hey Tami you can bring yours down to Mesa for the winter:-).

Blessings,
Awanda

Prescott, AZ

I haven't been able to find to much information on how to grow this vine. Does anybody have any growing info. or perhaps a link. I wonder if it should be planted in the same type of soil as Hoya. Ann and Ann you should be able to find this vine in Oregon, that is where this nursery is located. Thanks Awanda, I will get her necessities packed !!! ;) I have a feeling I may not be able to get it out of the greenhouse by next spring...

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Tami "her necessities" ROTFLMBO!!

Blessings,
Awanda

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Tami, I'll take a little trip to my local gardening center and check it out!
Ann

Prescott, AZ

Well ya know, girls will be girls... She'll need some clips, her own special fertilizer, pelletized of course ;) and she will be needing her own clippers and misting bottle !!!

Prescott, AZ

It is just a beautiful vine Ann, It should be spelled dregea sinensis if anyone is having difficulty finding it on there site.

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Well, Tami. That'll just mean she is like every other plant that I am a servant to :-).

You know, I stumbled on a commercial website that sells wild varieties of milkweed (i.e. non-captive hoya-ish plants) which look very similar do our indoor critters. http://www.butterflybushes.com/milkweed.htm

Ann

Prescott, AZ

Ann, that is funny, I have been looking on those sights too. I found some beauties. I wonder if the seeds are hard to germinate like Hoya seeds. They seem like they will do good in our hot climate, and we have tons of monarch butterflies.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Tami...

Dunno what you are doing....but hoya seeds germinate like weeds!!! The other asclepiads like the Crown Flower would be a great treat for your monarchs!!!

Prescott, AZ

LOL, Hey now remember I don't live on a tropical island.. My H. heuschkeliana seeds germinated really good, but the H. australis never germinated at all. I guess sigh, I am a germinating loser..... The pods on the milkweed are really cool looking. I will have to go look up the Crown Flower too. Thanks Carol for the info..

Knoxville, TN

Tami, the trick is to use fresh seeds. I am certain if you planted ripe seeds, you would be the Queen of germination.

Prescott, AZ

O.K. Carol, I've been checking the Crown Flower out between lightning storms, she is pretty too, and I love that purple.

Mel I have heard that about the seeds. I think that is why H. heuschkeliana did so well, ripe and right from the pod into the baggie. I'm wondering what the success rate would be with the milkweed seed if they are just as finicky...

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I think if the seeds are fresh, they will be fine. Fresh doesn't necessarily mean 12 hours after picking. I sent some seeds to Christina in Sweden and they arrived 8 or 9 days after picking and they germinated just fine. Unless the seeds cost a fortune, I would give it a go...goferit, Tami.

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Tami I definately agree with Mel about the seeds needing to be fresh. Maybe you need to send your seeds to me:-).

Awanda

Did anyone that ordered this plant get it yet? I just read on the other forum that they are not sending them out due to the heat. I would think in little sleaves like that they could be insulated enough to do just fine for shipping. I mailed plants last week in the heat and they all got to their people OK.
Marcy

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Marcy I ordered one and I haven't received an email saying it wasn't going to be sent. It was due to be mailed yesterday; I'm going to email them and see if it was sent.

Prescott, AZ

I haven't received mine either, or a e-mail saying it was sent. And they haven't charged my credit card. She told me on the phone that it would be shipped yesterday.

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Tami my cc has been charged.

Prescott, AZ

Then they should be sending it to you soon. By the way, what type of soil are you all going to plant yours into. I can't find any information on that. I guess I could call the nursery tomorrow and ask them what they would recommend. Hey I did win some milk weed plants on ebay too. The flowers have similair coloration to H. fraterna.

Long Beach, CA

Boy, we really ARE obsessed when we start buying weed seeds aren't we? Ha Ha
Marcy

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

I can't seem to find this on that website...and I did spell it dregea sinensis.

Did they remove it because you all bought all they had? (LOL)

Google search finds lots of sources in the UK....none in the US.

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Nan you're probably joking about buying them all, but I think we did! I looked last night and couldn't find them either:-). All gone.......

Blessings,
Awanda

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

No, actually that doesn't surprise me at all!

so much for that.....

Long Beach, CA

Im sure they will have more soon. Anything that sold like that, they will be propagating like crazy. Ha.
Marcy

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

You're probably right, Marcy!

Anyone have a photo of one?
Curiosity has the best of me.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I am the one who got the phone call from forestfarm about my plant not being shipped. They felt it was too hot this week to ship, even via airmail so my plant will be shipped out this coming monday.

I also just spoke with a sales rep at forest farm. They do have a very limitede number of the dregeas left in the tubes.

If you look in the photo gallery on the site and click on the letter W is where you will find it. It still shows the one gallon plants as being available but they are not. To get thet ubes you have to call them.

I brought this to the reps attention that the 1 g's are still listed as being available and they are going to get that taken care of.

Anyone who still wants one may want to give them a call

What a beautiful vine! I luv any kind of vine.

Thanks for the info, David.
Glad to hear they were conscientious about not sending yours in the heat!

Hope it arrives soon and in good health!

While browsing the 'net yesterday.....I found seeds of this through Chilterns and ordered them.....I think I'll try that route, and maybe in the future I can share!

Prescott, AZ

Mine arrived today. It's packaged very well..... I almost lost my patience trying to get it out of the box. I also thought WOW what a huge vine as the box is very narrow and about 3' tall. But it was only about 1 1/2 feet tall.... Hope ya all get yours soon. I haven't gotten my Fraterna though :(

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Tami I must have received mine yesterday too, but didn't see it until I went outside this morning. The UPS person must have delivered it late last night:-).

Blessings,
Awanda

Long Beach, CA

I got mine too. Here poor David was nice enough to come in here & tell us all about it, and now he is the only one not getting one yet. That doesn't seem right.
Anyway, they certainly DID over box these things I'd say. LOL. I got a 40 inch tall box & WAY down in the bottom of it was my little 12" high plants. However, that is OK I guess as they were packaged very securely. In fact, SO DARNED securely, I could (like Tami) hardly get them out without destroying the box. The plant was impossible to budge from reaching way down in from the top, so I had to open the bottom which is stapled and taped shut. Then the plants are all taped so well & snug in there that I ended uphaving to cut all around them. Ha. Finally got to them and was quite pleased with the little vines though. I have them resting in the shade & will plant them up later today. I am curious as to how fast they will grow. If they start to shoot up, I guess I will trellis them.
Anyway, I hope you get yours soon David, & then we can all compare growth habits.

You must have been doing the happy dance, Marcy!

Nan was Chilterns the only place to order the seeds? I'm off to do a google...lol.
:) Donna

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

It's the only place I found, and I stopped there, as they do ship to other countries, reasonably, and they have a *very good* reputation.
I know I've ordered from them before, but for the life of me can't recall what I ordered!! LOL!

Seems that many places on my search where this vine was discussed, most of the people had grown it from seed....and many of the seedlings were coming out with variegation......so I'm game to try it if others have done it with success!

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

I just potted mine today. I'm going to grow it in a pot until early next spring and then I'll plant it in the ground. Did anyone else received a catalog with their order?

Blessings,
Awanda

You guys who live closer to Oregon than I do will get your plant son time. I live way over here on teh east coast just south of Myrtle Beach. I know some of you know where that is!!

FF just didnt feel comfortable sending plants that far in this extreme heat. I do know that they have my plant reserved because its paid for so i'm not worried about not getting one.

I was also told by a sales rep that these are very fast growing vines so Awanda you may be repottig a lot sooner than you think!!!

David

Philomath, OR

Where in Oregon are these plants from? -joanne

Prescott, AZ

Looks good Awanda, I haven't gotten mine planted since I talked to you... Hey you can eat M&M's and paint too. LOL Mine is getting yellow leaves, so I better get busy and get her planted. It's probably from trying to yank her out of the box. :O

Joanne my tag says Williams, OR. If they grow as fast as there supposed to, cuttings should be easy enough to get. ;)
