get out the big guns - sevin works great....

Decatur, IL(Zone 5b)

YEAH for sevin. Yes it does work my Hibiscus was so covered you didnt even know what it was. Sevin got those buggers. and the next day the hibiscus bloomed holes and all. Still so pretty.

4 oclocks work wonders i saw a few eating on mine today. natural poison to them.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Me too. I have four o clocks planted in strategic locations and I find dead beetles anywhere close to them so this is pretty convincing to me that four o clocks do help.

Decatur, IL(Zone 5b)

Wow Thank you I will get some 4 oclocks and put by my hibiscus

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

That is just so strange. I have morning glories, hibiscus, datura, brugmansia, etc., etc., and roses. The only thing the Japanese Beetles bothered was my Oranges & Lemons rose bush. The rose bush is in close range of all the other plants mentioned and nothing else was damaged by the JBs. Will have to buy some 4 o'clocks, though!!
What types of hibiscus are they? Tropical or hardy?

Skowhegan, ME(Zone 5b)

can someone mail photos of 4 oclocks. i think I have some but not sure.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Here is photo of my Pink Bi-Color.....

I do have some plants that I'll be happy to send for postage.
They will be this color, Broken Fuchsia, - Or, Solid White.

Y'all, sevin is the pesticide that Union Carbide was manufacturing in Bophal, India in 1984 when an explosion killed upwards of 16,000 and left 120,000 still disabled today. See http://bhopal.org/whathappened.html

Waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

thank you sevin for jap beetles on monrning glories. My husband found some yesterday on ours and was having a fit. I've tried the soap water and everything and this morning there they were. Good blast of watter and lemon joy and lemon ammonia. Can I get sevin at a place like Menards or Home Depot???? or do I have to go to a garden center or nursery to find some.

Once again thanks for anwsering a question I hadn't asked yet.

Four'oclocks. I didn't know they were helpers with the problem. Maybe I should grow some of those too. Thanks

I have smart weed growing in the yard and the beetles eat this before anything else. So I just don't weed it out until they go back into the ground.

Thats prety much how mine look also. So sad. My daughter and her hubby just bought a house last Aug. The most beautiful MG's I've ever seen. They don't have the darm jap beetles. What can I say?

Skowhegan, ME(Zone 5b)

my babies are looking worse by the day, leaves are yellowing, some are turning brown and dying, I hope it recovers. We have also been having heavy rain here, and extreme humidity. Will post some updated pics soon. Hopefully with blooms. ~ Sherry

I am wondering about "4 oclocks" . is this an annual ? and, is this the "Proper" name for them if I'm trying to find them?

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

They come back from roots and volunteer seedlings in zones 8 and up. In cold zones you have to dig and store the tubers. I always have some tubers in the spring to give away when I clean and organize my flower beds. There are tons of seeds everywhere right now but it is too close to winter to start them.

You would do good to obtain seeds and start some in spring to grow them. They will form a tuber that you can dig and store over months of summer growing.

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

They are officially scientifically called mirabilis jalapa, but I am sure on the seed trading forum, everyone will know them as four o clocks also.

Paris, TN(Zone 6b)

If anyone wants 4 o'clock seeds for protecting their MG's next year, please drop me a D-mail. I have about 18 plants, so plenty of seeds. I just normally don't sort them by color, so if you like yellow/fuschia/coral/broken, drop me a d-mail.
