oh phoey! that will teach me!

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

I have been canning jelly for weeks it seems. Blueberry, figs and peaches, today I was working on my last batch..i could finally see the end. While cooking it down, I could not help myself to pop in at DG. Well, got interested in a thread and then...that awful smell of jam overcooking..rats! That'll teach me..I know better than doing two things at once..sign me, a dg junkie...Oh yeah, does anyone have any ideas on 'burnt peach jams'?

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Lisa - just disconnect the computer....lol! It's the only way you are going to stay away and get on with the jam making. I can't believe you are still at it. Sorry the peach was burnt :-)

Lisa, I can relate......I have to set the timer on my stove to remind me to stir things, change the sprinkler position and other tasks. Otherwise, I'd sit down and not look up for hours!

Hmmmm, maybe that jam can be passed off as "blackened peach jam"? Or turn the blackened side up and pretend you were caramelizing the top of it like a creme brulee!

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

LOL, Lisa, I go outside to look at something when I'm baking bread, and start weeding, or moving or, you know, and the bread gets a tad done!! The computer is upstairs, the kitchen is downstairs - do you suppose my DH had a plan??

Burnt peach jam sounds like something from my childhood.

My mother has famously burned practically everything edible in her lifetime (salads omitted), she can certainly turn the most succulent and choice dishes into food for the ancient gods.

We learned to cook in self defence, which I think was her general idea.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Lisa, if I were you I think I would reserve the unburned portion, add some orange jucie and ground cloves to make glaze
for poultry and pork. {maybe even add some mustard for a sweet tart taste}

Louisa--disconnect the computer??*gasp* perish the thought! -grin-
Mz M: you want figs??? hmmm...when are we doing that trade??
Ahhh go-vols: what a good idea!!! i could serve it over blackened 'gator :
Kathleen-My puter is right around the door from the kitchen--bad location, small house. But boy if I had an upstairs and it was there--I'd have the prettiest legs in town!
Baa-your discription of your moms culinary feasts sound like my MIL (whom I dearly love) When my hubby first tasted my cooking he asked me to marry him!
Jerrie: I have managed to salvage the stuff..thinking on the lines of homemade ice cream or something..yummy!
Thanks all for the stories!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Lisa, I think maybe we should privately compare photos of MILs - we may have the twins separated at birth or something. (And yes, when we were engaged and DH tasted my cooking, he called home and told his mama he was getting married to a girl who could cook, LOL!)

Bless her heart, my MIL thinks the stove has two temps: off and high. She bought a new stove because her old one burned everything. (Really.) There's no middle ground with her and the stove, but to be fair she does manage to whip up some pretty tasty things every now and then, and I do love her dearly!

I have 3 married brothers, not one of them married a woman who could cook. They are all excellent cooks though and experts at sewing, ironing, general housework and strangely knitting and crochet LOL

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

wow, what a catch baa!!!

Now you come to mention it Lisa, yes they are (in a domestic way LOL).

I have the same skills, although I'm pretty terrible at knitting and crochet, and I'm now wondering why I'm still single LOL.

Do men really only appreciate good knitting?

;)

Oh my Lisa! I've done the same thing. My computer is in the basement on one end of the house and my kitchen is on the main floor on the opposite end. Boy that homemade jam sounds good (burnt or not). Baa - lol!

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Solved this problem after many burned roasts, etc. Get a little portable timer for your belt. Mine is about the size of a beeper and has saved many a meal and baked bread.

Hello Lisa, didnt rot your peaches did i lol.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

I would hate to clean the pot. Sound like my house used to be when the kids were growing up. Jim

Hey Lisa,
Got on the computer and forgot what you were supposed to be doing????? That NEVER happens to me. lol lol I can give you the addys of my in laws. They like everything burned! Besides the holidays are quickly approaching. Just don't put my name on the card. They already think I am a 'bad egg' for stealing the family's baby boy (hence my screen name), but he was 28 for crying out loud! Oh, and don't send him any. He has been reformed to like things cooked the normal way. Good luck with your future batches.
Michele
