Re-blooming saucer magnolia?

Council Bluffs, IA(Zone 4b)

We planted 2 pink saucer magnolia trees in October of 2004. They have bloomed beautifully both springs we have had them. Yesterday when I was watering I noticed buds developing again on both trees!! This did not happen last year and I do not believe they should be re-blooming! Does anyone know if this is normal? Thanks!

As I look out at my Saucer Magnolia at this very moment, I see at least 50 flowers........so yes, it's normal!

A small mid to late summer re-bloom is not uncommon. I have Dr. Merrill and soulangiana, both of which give a few flowers in August usually. My other magnolia, Butterflies, which is an incredible showstopper, unfortunately hasn't yet shown any propensity for re-blooming. It is still a young one though, seven years here from a one gallon pot and it is a somewhat of a slow grower. It would have done better if the rabbits hadn't nearly girdled it in its third winter. If you like magnolias and have room for one more, please consider Butterflies. You wont regret it.

Thanks for the info! I am absolutely thrilled I will get more flowers! And thanks for the Butterflies tip - I do have room for one more magnolia! :)
