I should have bought it....................

Don't you hate it when you travel a long way, find an interesting plant but control yourself and then regret it!!

The leaves emerged silver spotted.

But the older ones were covered in silver.

ohmygoodness! I would have bought as long as it didn't cost a fortune!

Susan

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Gorgious Kell, I would have bought it for sure.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

THUNK! .....hang on, I just fell out of my chair.LOL, Not because it's such a beauty -which it sure is- but because you exercised SUCH restraint!
Did you take your temp? Are you feeling ok? {kidding}

Must have been the Cali heat gettin' to ya!

The white coloration on the new leaves is stunning!!

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

LOL Kell...beautiful plant!

I had to come over here to give you a hard time! LOLOL I was just checking to see if you remembered to post it on the right forum! hehehe Love ya!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hey Brinda! How embarrassing that I did that! LOL You need to start growing a few begonias, lady! Some are as colorful as coleus!

Oh Lali, it was $19.99 and I was just too cheap! I think that is so high, don't you Susan? I get spoiled that Longs has them for $5.99 though these are in bigger pots.

Patricia, Sloats have all sorts of begonias now. I went to 3 of them yesterday in Marin on a begonia prowl. I will take more pics of the ones I got later.

Here is another I saw but did not get. It was odd, a light green color. Looked similar to a fibrous except the leaves were lighter and bigger.

The flowers were blah though!

Thumbnail by Kell

$19.99 was a great price!! I say that because hardly any begonias except bedding plants are sold around these parts. There is a rarer plant greenhouse that is about an hour's drive from me and would have probably sold that plant (if they ever had one) for $40-$50. You're so lucky!

Susan

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have bought a begonia for that much, but only 1! LOL. I like to pay $5.99 for a big 6 inch pot! Unfortunately, you do not get many weird ones for that price.

Here is another I found, liked, but did not get.

None had their names attached.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Kell, that first one is b. convolvulacea

I would have snatched up the second one in a heart beat. Which Sloats wat *that* had that one?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh shoot. Oh shoot. LOL. Maybe I better not tell you. LOL. Actually I think the one in Novato had the second one too. The one in San Rafael had it too I think.

Here is another I did not get. It was a bit lackluster.

Here is one I did get. It was a bit lackluster too but I was sick of saying NO to myself.

Now those two I have! First one, I just got help with id on from some expert begonia heads and the consensus is b. 'U168' and the second I have no idea the name. Anyone?

hopefully, the first will pop out with some nice blooms!! I didn't check for buds yet... too hot to go check now. Getting 109º on my thermometer! Sigh!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What a great name. Not. LOL
b. 'U168' I would never remember that one for sure.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

I guess I am going to have to make a trip across the bay next week. I am so bored I can hardly stand it. I have fallen in love with my cane begonia's. I am just worried about overwintering them. I have even thought that since I am not heating the greenhouse, maybe buying a couple more propagating mats to keep them on during the winter in the greenhouse. Some that I bought this summer as 4 inch pots are already moved up to 8 inch pots.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Patricia, there's a garden fair on the 5th at Strybing from 10am to 3pm, I'll be there with another Daver from out of town and likely Kell too. Why dont you join us!!

I have some canes that sit on my front porch, we get to the mid to low 20's and it makes it every year. (It's Sophie Cecile, my least favorite of my begonias, so I keep thinking I'll accidentally lose her to the cold but she comes back like a trooper! the other is Looking Glass)

I've had canes survive in my greenhouse before I got heat out there. But as the collection grew, I wanted the insurance.

I put down soil warming cables snaked along my bench and a small oil filled heater (by DeLonghii) and that did the trick. I kept it at about 45 and everyone did fine. All my tropicals did great (but not hoya, too moist, they all came inside the house)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I do not know what I am going to do in winter Patricia. I have to stop buying all new plants.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Scroll up, scroll down, up, down. Where the heck am I?? LOL, duplicates going one here?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Sheesh, I can't believe I wasted a post without adding a pic!

Gosh 20 minutes unaacounted for, I get so sidetracked. Anyway,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Yes Patricia! Come join us!!

My canes hate it outside here in winter, They die way back, get mildew.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

That is so pretty Sue. So are you coming too with us on the 5th, Sue? You need an outing! And I have a new place to eat lunch over there, it a new little place that just opened so I am dying to try. I think it is Vietnamese.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I will have to take cuttings for you all of this nonstop blooming one I have had outside in a pot for 2+ years now, it's about 2 1/2 ft tall. Marked as 'Ginny' but I don't think that's correct as Ginny is supposed to have white blooms. Happenstance has these images of her 'Ginny'. http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/29084/

Yours looks like Ginny to me. They do have the red hair on the pale pinkish petals. Environment seems to effect them too. the one I grow looks deep pink.
Furry on the leaves? Candy's 'Ginny' looks like Ramierez to me.

Here's Kartuz' info on 'Ginny' http://www.kartuz.com/pc/20219/2BEG10/Begonia+Ginny.html
my flowers are nowhere near that pink and tend to be more pale but the red 'hair' on the petal backs is red-pink

Here's a description from a 1984 Begonia Catalog put out by the Thompsons

Quoting:

'GINNY' (Watchorn) Glossy, very dark green leaves; red undersurface, Red-bearded, pink flowers all year. Charming. $2.00

[quote]

I dont find the leaves glossy (the way b. thurstonii is) but I see that in their book on begonias, the Thompsons have it listed under the catagory 'shrub like, Hairy-leaved'
the book says this

[quote]

Most hairy leaved begonias are seasonal bloomers. There are only a very few that are everblooming; the only one, to the authors' knowledge, is b. 'Ginny'. Most have bearded flowers, which are interesting as well as attractive.

In the same book the flowers are described as pink. Mine is very pale pink near white. But it's also in deeper shade.

probably more than you ever wanted to know about 'Ginny' LOL.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Cal Hort has the same begonia as Candy's (or similar looking) on their web site listed at 'Ginny', maybe she got her's from Cal Hort. http://www.calhortsociety.org/flower-show/landscape-show-2003/source/dscn2340.htm

This is what I know to be 'Ginny' http://www.eaplants.goldphoria.com/i/Begonia__Ginny_.jpg

And this is closer to the color I get http://www016.upp.so-net.ne.jp/kamugallery/sozai/begonia-ginny-l.jpg

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Patricia, we can meet for a day of going to nurseries if you want! And you can give me Lali's hoyas. I am going to Kaiser Thursday in Pleasanton.

Lali, I really need a conservatory trip. So I do not have the 12th marked. So the 5th and the 12th?

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

yes both days, if you want, that is.

Lets do a mid week Berkely Botanical garden so Patrica can join up!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Ok lets. Have you been there Patricia?

And sure both days but can we go to the conservatory too.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

I am not sure, but I would love to go to the Berkely Botanical gardens. That is so sweet of your gals .

Kell, right now I am having physical therapy every other day but if you give me a time, I could run these over to you at Kaiser in Pleasanton. And I would love to meet up with you to go nursery hopping, so let me know what day you are available and I will try to work my appts. around it. But I would like to get these hoya's to Lali before they burn up in my greenhouse. I went out there yesterday and it was 120 in there.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

My days, weekends are booked. Kids are for the weekends, I only have a few weeks left with them *sniff* and my Dad starts daily treatments for 6 weeks probably starting sometime in the next week or so is my guess and family is responsible for transportation and I need to support my Mom as much as possible. I am keeping busy trying to keep the house clean, food in fridge to they can all help themselves should I be gone, some work done so I can get a bit of needed mula and the plants watered. Today is dye-my-hair day so I don't look quite as old as I feel LOL!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh poor Sue, you are having such a hard time of it. When your life settles down we can all go some where grand and green. I bet you are a huge comfort to your Mom and your Dad.

Patricia, I have a 10:30 appointment at Kaiser. Want to meet at 11:15 at Armstrongs? We can shop there then go to lunch somewhere. Are there anymore plant places around there that have escaped my penetrating eye? Is it going to be hot again? I hate this heat. If I kill the hoyas, no one can blame me. Promise??

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

And great info on Ginny, thanks Lali!! Definately the fuzzies going on here.
