I've wondered about which was correct. Thanks landerlily!!
Come sit on the porch a spell
Thanks for straightening me out.
I am writing this note from Zone 3 (Central Wyoming) where I am visiting my Mother and sister. It's windy here on the plains - the forecast for today was 25-30 mph (all day). Spent about an hour today working in Mom's yard. I was born and raised here, and I do have a great appreciation for the vast land and scenery. However, I must admit that I am happy to live where more things have a chance to grow.
Entlie - (Holding on to my hat in the Wyoming wind)
Hi Everyone,
My name is Sandy and I live just outside of North Myrtle Beach. About 5 years ago, my husband and I moved a 90 year old farm house out to the country here on 5 acres- part of 188 acres that my dad separted from his main farm and gave me, behind a pretty pond and a few minutes outside of N. Myrtle and we have worked on it all these years until we moved in last winter. It has been a busy spring and summer, I have never been much of a gardener, always content with the "contractor package deal " yard of my previous home, but here I gathered brick, made beds, and am the proud owner of a rose garden, and a "grandma" garden, similar to the namesake( she would be sooo surprised). My mom was never an outdoor person, so I have tried to read everything I can to learn more.We grew tobacco on our farm, but i get my love of flowers from my grandma who could grow anything from a twig. I hope that i inherit her genes, lol. I have lived here in the same area all my life as my family has roots here to the late 1600s. I also have lots of family in the Charleston area.I just wanted to say hi and complement all of yall on your beautiful gardens.
Howdy, Sandy! And welcome aboard!
Sounds like you have quite an exciting life with your land ties, family, and the many generations before you. You're an important link in your family lineage; hope you realize that!
Your place sounds like quite an adventure...have fun with it and enjoy. Hope you will share more info with us as time goes on.
Feel free to jump on in and let us know your progress and such, and please share experience as well as feel comfortable asking questions!
You've just joined the best people and the best gardening website in the world! Have fun! See you around the site!!
Shoe.
Thank you Shoe, I appreciate the welcome ! Sandy
Welcome Sandy, I'm glad you stopped by! Wow, what a family history you have. That's impressive! My grandmother was similar to your grandmother in that she could grow anything, too. I have such fond memories of her home on the lake, the chickens, her pond and her garden.
Entlie - apologies for taking so long in getting back to you. I think your idea of painting the chair plumbago blue would look really pretty and particularly in the fall when the plumbago turns to its fall color!
We finished putting in the pathways and the arbor is up and in place now. I ended up with five extra Firepower Nandinas, so Larche planted them near the pond. A splash of color year around from them will look nice. Now it's rest while I wait for the mid-October shipments of more perennials to arrive.
Here is a birds-eye view of the pond and garden area. As you'll see, I have lots of options for plantings all around the pond. The day this was taken was in the early evening, but this area runs the full range of sun to shade. That gives me way too many options and it's been hard to make choices!
Hey Sandy
Loris is such a pretty place! We are waiting for this year's Bog Off.
Nancy (not very far from you)
Morning Sandy, your home and garden sound lovely. I had to smile to myself when I read your post; it sounds like you are a (gardening) addict in the making. LOL
Relax, you are among the finest enablers in the world here at DG. Be sure to check out the plant trading forum, you can find lots of neat plant material there. alice
Oh I come to Myrtle once or twice a year maybe you can really get your yard landscaped and we could sit a spell. I love old farm houses as I was raised in a 17 room one in West Georgia and we had a huge creek behind it. Oh how I miss the country.
Welcome to our world.
Lavina
Nancy,
I m looking forward to the bog off too, i went to the Aynor Hoe Down last weekend and got the prettiest grapevine wreaths for the doors!
Alice, your part of the country is so pretty, I have cousins who live near you along the waterway in Beauford.
Lavinia, I would love for you to come sit a spell on the porch, have some tea, and lets chat about gardening. My friends are tired of hearing me talk about it!
Thanks yall for the welcome, Sandy
Okay ya'll...spill it! What's a Bog off?
Shoe.
That part of the Lowcountry is beautiful. I love going to Hunting Island, too. But I've never heard of a Bog Off, either. Is this a sort of chicken bog competition or something? Or Frogmore Stew (which I love but can't eat anymore since I have developed a shellfish allergy--something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. No shrimp! No scallops! No fun!).
The people on this thread are terrific.
Laura
I live in Frogmore! (But I don't make the stew either, my DH is allergic).
A number of years ago the locals decided that was not a very sophsticated name so they changed the name to St. Helena Island.
Ms_Carolina - glad you think plumbago blue would look good. That's still my plan for my adirondack chair, and I hope to get it done this fall.
Does anyone know how to successfully transplant ajuga? It seems like every time I cut the umbilical cord and re-locate mine, it dies.
Entlie
Shoe, the Bog Off is a fall festival that is held every year in Loris. There is a parade, chicken bog is served, there is a chicken bog contest, lots of booths out on the street with arts and crafts, lots of hand made items like fall decorations and hand made jewelry, etc. I may go this year to see if there are some pretty bird houses.
Thanks, Sandy. (Heck, I grew up in the South but had to go look up 'chicken bog'. Never heard of it referred by that name.)
Sounds similar to our town's "Hog Day" celebration...lots of bbq, foods, crafts, games, etc.
If you go to the Bog Off, take some pics and share, okay!?
Shoe.
Entlie, I have transplanted lots of Ajuga, and in a rather cavalier fashion I would say, and it has never died. Maybe it doesn't like the spot you're putting it in.
Hi all,
I just joined DG and found all of you. I really enjoyed reading all of this. I will send more latter. I am tired, been caulking gutters all afternoon with hubby.
K, Shoe, Sandy
Smokey...A hearty WELCOME TO DG!
Go rest up...hope to see you around the site!
Shoe.
Landerlily, So not to beat a dead horse, but getting back to the Jasmine/Jessamine thing. The top paragraph of the Carolina Gardening forum says:
"...with the Carolina Yellow Jasmine as its state flower."
Should this say "Jessamine?"
Entlie
Hmmm, I must never have read or noticed beacuse LanderLily is right The correct spelling (and pronounciation) is Jessamine.
Yes, it should be "jessamine." Of course, since at least half the state says "jasmine" I'm probably the only person to be bothered by it! I thinks it's kin to the "poinsettia-poinsetta" pronunciation debate. But it is the Official State Flower and the Legislature calls it "jessamine." Maybe it's a curse, since it's poinsonous! But it really is pretty, grows everywhere, and requires no effort from humans to look good. I love seeing it blooming in the woods in the Spring, way up high in trees.
Laura
Hi Everyone!
Does anyone have any experience with the Yuletide Camelia? I see them in Lowes and Home Depot and was thinking about picking up a few to plant along my garage. The woman at Home Depot said they bloom during Christmas, is this right? The picture on the tag is really pretty...single red flower with bright yellow in the middle. Curious to know how easy or difficult it is to care for them.
I think it is great that there is a Carolina forum....nice meeting you all.
Thanks,
Tia
Up around your way they might bloom for Christmas but around here, where it is lots warmer, they start in October and run through Thanksgiving. I believe they are very easy to care for.
I planted a Yuletide camellia early this spring, so can't yet testify to bloom time; it has buds, but don't know when they'll open. It's been a fairly simple guest to care for, but does need acid soil with excellent drainage.
Thanks for all the info. I am going to Lowes to purchase a few Yuletides today...I know I will come home with all sorts of stuff to plant. I have no restraint when the weather is neither hot or cold...feels perfect outside. I will be sore tomorrow!!!
Have a good day everyone!
Hi Mystic, we are neighbors. I live off hwy 88.
Did anybody else notice in the opening paragraph for Carolina Gardening that the state flower has been changed to Carolina Yellow "Jessamine"? State flower of SC that is.

I hadn't looked at the opening paragraph (or anything else lately!) but I'm glad it got changed to the correct version. My godmother (a stickler for such) would be happy too. I've been working at the State Fair for the past week in the Home and Craft Department getting ready for the opening yesterday. It's fun, but long days on your feet and I've come home too tired to do anything but collapse in a hot tub.
Those Yuletide Camellias sound interesting. I may have to head to Home Depot to check them out. We have a few Sussanqua (susanqua? I don't know the correct spelling, must look it up, right?) blooms and lots of buds on a row at the back of our lot. It should be really pretty later on. Our chrysanthemums are starting up and the geraniums are hanging in there--a bit leggy, but still a few blooms.
My niece just got engaged and called to ask when daylilies are at their best. She wants to get married outdoors and have daylilies in the wedding. Should be fun to do all the flowers the day of the wedding, right? And no evening wedding either probably unless she doesn't mind if some are closing already. So I guess we'll literaly sweat it out in the sun! I may have to have a little reality chat with that child.
I love this forum. Hope all are well.
Hey Smokey! We ARE neighbors. My parents live in Piedmont down hwy 86. I am about 10 minutes away. Small world!
I finally got three Yuletides planted. Took me all week..inbetween work and everything else but they are all tucked in. They are loaded with buds so I will make sure to take some pics when they open. I just wish Home Depot had larger shrubs for sale...these are kinda on the small side. Small but very cute!!! :-)
mysticmoonshine, I love your name.
CarolinaTracer, Terry from DG fixed the opening paragraph. I think she did a good job of compromising - since many people apparently do call it Jasmine, and keeping in mind that common names aren't the official nomenclature. Thanks, Terry!
