Frangula(Rhamnus) caroliniana

(Zone 6b)

What has been anyone's experiences with this tree? Does it sucker? I've heard that it does from some people, but I've never seen a printed reference to any suckering. How about seedlings? Does it produce prolific seedlings? How tall has anyone's grown? I know most are 12'-15', but some have been known to be as tall as 40', but what has it done in anyone's yard or property? Thanks for any and all info. on this nice native small tree.

I have one that I bought last year and it has been slow growing for me. Maybe it hasn't gotten established enough yet. Mine is in full sun but it is only about 2ft tall. Unfortunately some deer must have gotten to it a few days ago because it is missing a few leaves. All in all, it is not aggressive for me. If it ever gets to be a decent size it could be an attractive tree. Maybe it would be happier in part shade.

Not suckering here, and no volunteer seedlings. Ornamental foliage, good fall color, terrific fruit display, no pests -- makes a really nice very small tree in part shade.
