Hi - I have a Stewartia in the back yard - this is the 2nd year. Last year it flowered nicely - this year it looks healthy, but it hasn't flowered. Infact, there doesn't even appear to be buds on it. I was suprised as it did bloom last year. We've had a funny summer, could that delay it? Also, will the buds suddenly appear? My parents have a Stewartia that was covered with blooms in mid-June. I can't remember if they have the Korean or the Japanese - I'm thinking we have 2 different types.
Thanks, Kara
Stewartia hasn't bloomed yet?
If this was a transplanted tree...meaning, balled and burlapped where roots were severed and you planted it last (2005) spring, then this is absolutely normal.
You bought and planted a tree with flower buds already formed, but root system reduced. It flowered in 2005. Since transplanting, your tree has been busy trying to recover supporting root system and not as invested in producing new flower buds for 2006 (or maybe even 2007 depending on how vigorous it is).
Patience; keep the tree healthy and you will be rewarded in years to come with copious flowers on your plant.
Thanks so much - I had guessed as much - it looks very healthy - my mom's stewartia is about 20' tall and was COMPLETELY covered with blossoms this year so I know what is in store for me! Thanks for the response...
Kara:
Maybe unknowingly (maybe just a New England cruel streak), but you are putting a dagger in the jealous hearts of many a Stewartia-phile on this forum.
20'? Covered with blossoms? I can hear the cries from the Ohio River valley...from the prairies of IL-gotten gains...even from the zone-pushers of the upper South tier.
The only way to get back in the good graces is....you must post pictures of said grandeur!
Geez - didn't mean to do that! Mine is only 6' tall - so that shouldn't upset many! I will go over to my mum's and photograph her tree - the trunk is amazing....hope it doesn't upset any of those Stewartia-philes!!
Kara
Upsetting, no; drooling with envy, probably. Looking forward to those photos!
