Nevada, MO(Zone 6a)

I can't grow this plant to save my life. How many have I killed? 10? 15? Who knows. I just don't even understand what I do wrong.

Cincinnati, OH

Yes!!! That would be great. I love orange flowers of any sort. Thanks Allison. Will send dmail as a reminder!! Hope Jan does stay the night, not for helping pack, but for visiting time!! :0 ) Although any help is always nice.

PlantMom, I've got mine in bright indirect light near a south facing window. It seems to like being fairly moist, so I have a wick running down into a gravel tray with water in it. (The gravel tray provides humidity, also.) I've fertilized it only infrequently, but it's growing steadily. Hope that helps!

Nevada, MO(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the info Critter! I love alsobias and that's why I keep torturing them to death. I think I'll buy yet another at the upcoming AGGS sale and try your advice--I think maybe I've let mine get too dry so I'll try the gravel tray and see if my luck changes. Poor alsobias--I feel guilty even thinking of buying another!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Stephanie if I had known I could have put one into our trade box. I fount they like to be more moist, humid and do like to be fed. Mine don't get fed much anymore just not up to it though they keep growing not the same or as many flowers.
When I could grow it right under light 12-16 hours each day it bloomed dozens of blooms a day foliage darker green . But I fount they surview in any room, any window I guess I've been lucky they grow like weeds for me with no care.
Try another one and do like jill mentioned above . Take stolons off when large enough to pot up on their own. They do not like to be tight intheir pots nor dry nor cold. Good luck !

Hi Allison
can you put more than one plant togeather ,mine look so bear

Oh my is this your Mom plant or a baby plant ? I have taken small stolons one time when I had like 40 of them and put several in a low pan pot. I placed each one all the way down into the soil until leaves lied flat on top and this grew well for me.
If you have a stolon and you cut the stem short good to start in small pot of like a 3 oz. solo cups . I fill them over flowing with soil-less mix. I cut any stem short. and again I put into middle of pot all the way down until foliage is touching flat on top of soil. I water threw with warm/hot water drain put under or in light and keep evenly moist, and they like food.
They normaly branch out and more so if stolons taken off and bloom more then too.
The plant you have in this picture looks to small for that pot/

Homosassa, FL(Zone 9a)

that is the mom plant,so it needs to be in a bigger pot.
here is some babys from it that i cut of and planted,i just put them in one pot,

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I would not put it in a large pot. You can let them run down the side if you like they will bloom too !
This picture I took a couple weeks ago just got them out of camera today ! It's even bigger today. This Alsobia Cygnet is growing in a 5 inch pan pot

Starfly, your 'Cygnet' is gorgeous! I hope it gives you loads of blooms. :-)

I think that plant has officially "filled its pot" and, as Allison said, it's time to start letting the stolons run over the edge... It's going to keep getting beatuifuller and beautifuller, LOL.

My first A. 'Cygnet' from Allison is now nearly as big as the one in your photo! I got another little plant from a friend and put it into a self-watering pot, and it really took off. I think it looks even happier than my other one, which is in a regular pot that gets bottom watered. Has anyone else ever tried one in a self-watering pot (one of those 2 piece ceramic planters)?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Jill Cygnet loves being wicked so would love 2 peice pot as long as the pot is proper size. I use to always keep mine wicked with some plant food in saucer all the time . This was the first one I grew a few years ago where all the other plants have come from. I have too many to do this now but when a person gets their plant they can wick or pot into 2 piece of proper size. It likes it warm , humid , like to be well fed, and light. The more light and warmth, humidity comes from wicking or double potting the more it will bloom and grow !
Eunice your plant is all of what Jill said ! You don't need a larger pot right now and if you want babies down the side you can do this they will flower too !

Elkins, AR(Zone 6b)

I dont have one ;0(

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

About those stolons.... How much "stem" do you leave attached? I've been cutting the stems long enough to reach about down to the bottom of the pot, figuring that would provide maximum moisture to the plantlet... Is that right? Or should I be trimming them shorter, maybe to 1/2 inch?

Thanks!

(Oh, and violet_grower -- I know you're propagating for spring trades! You'll have one!)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I leave enough just to help stolon stay in soil less than 1/2 inch I fill cup real well to top so stolon leaves can touch soil I water threw real well . Within a week it will root and be growing ! I have a half a dozen or more big ones I need someone to cut off and root for me .

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

OK, I think I'd better check mine... If they aren't getting roots, I'll trim the stem short and replant! Thanks!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

There has been times I've had stolons that were laying on a tray of plants and I had not got to them and I pour water into the tray and they were rotting right there ! In the air. no soil just all these cool roots :))

Oh, too bad! There's always a risk in sending plants -- you're at the mercy of the weather and the delivery service even sending within the US. Sending between the US & Canada definitely increases those risks and adds custom regulations too, as we've discussed in this forum before. It's always sad when plants don't make it despite good packaging etc.

Donna, hopefully somebody in Canada will have Episcias to trade with you!

Allison, I trimmed and replanted a few stolon babies that had been down for over a month without rooting (they still looked "fresh" enough), and I put down a few more... all in little 3 oz cups... I'm trying to resist the temptation to tug at them every day to see if they've rooted yet, LOL.

Did I tell you that my E. 'Teddy Bear' from you had its first bloom when family was visiting? My neice's favorite color is flamingo pink... she was just entranced by this little plant with its bright pink bloom!

Allison, I'm sooo sorry but I just meant that I would have loved to have one of your babies. I didn't mean that you had forgotten to send me one. I'm really, really sorry that I got you upset.
