Allison

Are they like AVs? I had never seen one that I know of. I like the ruffled flower.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

They were registered in 1964 I think the year was as an EPsica but now they have changed this and given the Cygnets their own catorgory. The are a Gesneraid.
I worte a big thread on the it's in second thread How to train your Cygnet

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Rob has some too
http://www.robsviolet.com/alsobia.htm

Alsobias are an extremely easy to grow and bloom member of the Gesneriad family. Formerly classifed as part of the Episcia genus, it shares a similar growth habit.
Alsobias grow like a strawberry plant, producing lots of lush green foliage on stolons This makes for a lovely, full, plant even when not in bloom. Being very tolerant of neglect, they are great for the novice!

Who grow this plant !
Who does not have one yet ?

Drumheller, AB(Zone 2a)

Hi Allison,

Thank you for the link to Rob's....I love all the Alsobias he has and I noticed that the Cygnet is larger than the dianthiflora but the Cygnet is more floriferous. That is good to know.

I would love to have them all! They are all so pretty!

TFS!

Cygnet is the best growing one I've had. It's a treasure to own one !

Cincinnati, OH

I have never even heard of these plants. How big can they get?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

These plants grow fast , no pinching needed just keep taking baby stolons off and put them into their own pot to root. I have grown them to 12 inch pot from a tiny 1/2 inch plant ! And then when the plant is the size I like and pot full I let the baby stolens start hanging down and they will form nice little plant like Spider plants do. But these will also bloom too !
I have shared hundreds and I mean hundreds in the past two years from one tiny plant !

I've never seen this plant and it is gorgeous. How can I get one. I can trade named av's or return postage.

(Zone 7b)

Allison, you sent me one of these, and I just love her - she blooms regularly, and grows so fast! A beautiful plant all around.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I can ship for postage but can't trade U've sold all my plants ...no longer can care them.
If not Rob's sells them and Ebay they can go high $$
But I still have several left

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Cherly I'm so happy so happy you are enjoying your plant ! It's a rea; treasure to onw one !

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

They do multiply readily from those stolons! If my stolons take root all right, I should have Alsobia 'Cygnet' plantlets to share soon also. So, anyone who finds this thread after Allison runs out of them, just LMK! She has shared babies with so many of us that I'm sure everyone who's interested in trading within this forum will soon have one in their collection.

Susan
Wel-Come to DG's and our wonderul African violet-forum !
You will love it here. Nice to meet you !
I use to grow a lot of Av's and just sold hundreds and my lights that's why I can't trade. But I do still have maybe a dozen Alsobias Cygnets left !

Thanks, your welcome is very sweet. I like it here already, it's very different from other forums. I hate to hear about selling your plants and lights, that must have been hard to do. I would love an Alsobia Cygnet, it looks like an old fashiioned plant, how do I contact you? Through a DMail?

Drumheller, AB(Zone 2a)

Hi Susan!

Welcome to our home on the web! So much knowledge here and everyone is so very helpful! I have learned so much in the short time I have been here. You will enjoy it!

I am in Canada where we are in the midst of a heat spell right now.

Joanne

Thanks Joanne, I see your sign in is 'orkidlady'. My son, 25, is the orchid collector. He started with a marked down pot from Home Depot, managed to get that one to rebloom and moved on to now having about 10 plants. My african violets, begonias and his orchids are all fighting for room at our house.

Hi Susan,

Sounds just like my home! That is great that your son loves orchids! My dad was the flower lover in our home when I was a kid.

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Allison,Save me one Pleasssssssssse. LOL

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I hope that I don't sound too stupid, but could someone please explain a little more in detail how to propigate my Alsobia Cygnet? Do I just cut the stolon off and put it in some soil? And how do I know where to cut it off?

Thanks,
Jesse

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

yup, just cut of a stolon (a cluster of leaves) and pot them in soil. They could probably use some extra humidity while rooting.

As for where to cut, the pics on this page are for an episcia, but the idea is the same. http://growtheworld.blogspot.com/2006/07/propagating-episcias-from-cuttings.html

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Keyring, that link is exactly what I needed.

Jesse

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Jesse it's so easy they grow like weeds :))
My Espicas too. They get no care and just window light for me. I fill proper cup or pot with soil -less mix and leave a small stem on the stolon and push down gently into the middle of soil. I water threw real good. Keep evenly moist. With in a week they are rooted and growing !
One's on the way for you Jan ! With buds !
Oh I made a thread with pictures step by step also with Mom Epsica and potting up her babies stolons ! Also a thread I did on Cugnets in our Gesneraid sticky !

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)
