I would like to add a few dwarf conifers to a bed (z6a) this year, but will wait until spring if that is a better idea. if I can still plant this year, when? just wait until the summer heat is over or later in fall?
some I am considering, but not set in stone (feel free to comment...a couple of these were suggestions from Dax, but the rest I have just tried to choose what might work for me)
Abies koreana 'Silberlocke'
Tsuga canadensis 'Gentsch White'
Pinus mugo 'Iseli White Bud'
Pinus parviflora 'Tani-mano-uki'
Juniperus chinensis ‘Sea Green’
Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Treasure Island'
Chamaecyparis thyoides 'Red Star'
Cryptomeria japonica 'Little Diamond'
Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Duncanii'
Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Barry's Silver'
thanks for any help you can offer - the pic is of the heather/heath/conifer bed which is much too empty

question for the experts on dwarf conifers
If you price any of those conifers I'm sure you will wait for fall to plant. That is a very exposed sun location and they would be stressed considerably to plant now. Well unless you live in Alaska. It has been raining non stop for 7 days here on Kodiak Island.
I have priced them and I know what you mean. I wasn't suggesting to plant now. Just wondering when. Fall is a pretty open window. seems there would be a big difference between mid-Sept and mid-Nov.
I like to get them in as soon as possible so I would plant in mid end of Sept so some roots can get moving through the soil. I always ammend so that the soil around the root ball is mixed well with the native soil so no limits on root growth with a smooth interface. Your mound is probably native soil with ammendments?
I'm planting tonite. No problem - I do it all the time (full sun). I also have perfect soil, I 'could' keep them moist 7 days a week, and I believe anytime you can get them in the ground, the earlier the better. I'm also an impulse buyer and have worked in nurseries where the motto always is, 'anytime the ground is workable, you can plant from a container'. Absolute brainwashing to some (me), but I don't lose plants???

P.s. I should add it rained 3" yesterday and earlier today I went and dug real wide and worked the soil so it's crumbly. All I gotta do is plant them by hand now:) Watering in advance is key in other words.. plus again the soil here is fast draining and just literally worth its' price in gold.

seems reasonable. right now it's native soil (which is heavy clay) with very little amendment. I've had a landscaper do the work who's used to working with the usual 'top 10' foundation plants that will grow almost anywhere. anyway, I will be amending the soil before I do any further planting. as you mentioned, there will be some $$ invested. I appreciate your input
